Once OS X has all the necessary apps. Is it possible to completely remove 9.1 from my iBook? Or will it always be needed? The reason I wanted to uninstall it is because I wanted to free up as much hd space as possible.

If you get to a point where you don't need Classic for any apps, OS 9 can go. That'll be at the earliest late this fall, I'd imagine, for most people - at least after 10.1 and Office 10 are out.

The nice thing about leaving 9 on, though, is you never know when you might come across an app you'd like that's purely a Classic app.

Also fonts in you installed on classic before you installed x will be lost unless you manually put them in your X folder. and who knows what other things work like that.

OS X can run without Classic.

FYI Apple plans to continue supporting 9.x until 2003, when they will have it phased out (if I'm correct).

I would keep Classic on the side when you have to run an app that will never be carbonized (I can think of several games plus other college test-prep programs).

Keep 9.1 around for Classic. Why do you want to cripple your system by causing a whole bunch of apps to become instantly useless?

The more software you can run, the better. This is why Windoze became the standard even though its interface sucked. We have fewer apps, so let's not limit ourselves further!
