I just saved a cute LC475 from the trashcan here at work.
It has 20MB RAM and a 80MB SCSI harddrive, no CD drive.

My question: Which MacOS is most suitable for this little guy?

And secondly: Where would I get the install floppy's for this?

Later on I will connect it to my G4 with appletalk so that it can
load applications from the G4 so disk space isn't really an issue.
As long as the OS + some space for virtual memory doesn't exceed
the 80MB it's fine.

Any advice?

Is that an '040 or an '030?

OS 8.1 is the latest system that will run on any 68k machine. I am using it on my Quadra 840av and on a Quadra 630, and it has been pretty stable.

With the size of your hard drive, you might benefit from a lighter system such as 7.5. Older systems can be downloaded from Apple for free. You might also be able to get a used system 8 CD online for around $20 or so.

I just re-read your post and noticed that your system doesn't have a CD. I could be mistaken, but I believe that included on the OS 8 CD are floppy disk images so that you can copy the installer from the CD onto floppies.

It's a 040 (68LC040 or something)

Could you post a link to the apple area where you can download those old floppy images? I couldn't find anything on the Apple site...

A LC 475 has a 68LC040 processor at 25MHz. The LC means that that processor does not have a FPU(math coprocessor.) It can run the following system software versions:7.1 w. Enabler 065, 7.11, 7.5, 7.5 Update 1.0, 7.5 Update 2.0, System 7.5 Version 7.53, 7.54 Update, 7.55 Update, 7.6, 7.61 Update, 8.0, and 8.1 Update. System versions beyond 7.61 require a CD drive to install-there are no floppies or images of floppies on the CD.

I just found my OS 7.6 CD, and it does indeed have floppy disk images on it. There are about 18 or so for the full install. The OS 8 CD, however, does not have the floppy disk images.

I also have a LC 475 at home which also has 20MB RAM.

I was running OS 8.0 on my LC 475, but I must turn on Virtual Memory or use RAM Doubler, because OS 8 eats about 12MB RAM !!! So, my machine slow down a lot.

Then, I tried 7.6.1, that is great. I can even open Netscape Navigator 4.08 without turn on VM, and the speed is a lot faster than OS 8.

Download the System 7.5 Network Access Disk from Apple's site. Use the floppy to boot up the machine, connect to your iMac, transfer the OS 7.6 installation files from your iMac to the LC 475's HD.

But I recommend you upgrade your HD.
