I didn't see a preexisting thread on it, so I thought I should post the rumor Dvorak is spreading that Apple may be preparing to buy Sun. I was listening to him yesterday on CNBC. He also mentioned a potential successor to Jobs as CEO whose name I did not recognize.

Well assuming this is the same Dvorak that was on video saying he makes things up just to annoy Mac users, then I thnk we can ignore it although it does sound very interesting.

Might I enquire as to whose name was mentioned as successor to Jobs?

I don't remember the name; I was working at the time and only listening to CNBC as background audio.

As for Dvorak pissing off Mac users, yeah, that's true. On the other hand, many of us thought he was full of it when he said Apple would switch to Intel, but he nailed that one. Now I take him much more seriously.

The ironic twist to this new rumor is that it's identical to a rumor that was spread about a decade ago, except in reverse: Back then everyone said it was nearly guaranteed that Sun would buy Apple; now Apple is said to be buying Sun.

I think you heard him wrong. Clearly, what he said was that Apple was buying The Sun—a business needs a mouth organ, after all.

I Googled "to buy Sun Microsystems" and got:
- Google About To Buy Sun Microsystems
- IBM ready to buy Sun Microsystems

Now Apple's in the mix? Sun has been faltering under the erosion of market share to cheap Windows systems... I'm just not sure I can see the advantage for Apple.

Wasn't Sun the ones that were going to buy Apple in the mid 90's?

Ha... Back in the 90's, Apple was either about to go under or be purchased by someone. Good times

That guy from Google joining the Board of Apple -Mr. Schmidt- was long time chief technology officer at Sun Microsystems… maybe even when Sun was going to buy Apple in the 90's…

Dvorak huh? Seems odd, doesn't he usually predict something more along the lines of 'Sun to buy Apple.'?

Oh man I loved being an Apple user in the 90's. It was do dangerous and dramatic. For people who were were in on the daily Apple news it is nothing short of a miracle that Apple pulled out of it mostly because of the iMac and OSX.

THAT'S IT! I can't take it anymore. Dvorak is an ass, Walmart is jealous of Apple, iTunes is going to have a name change, the MTV Music Awards suck, Sheryl Crow is afraid of plastic.......

A few years back, I would have thought that Apple buying Sun was a good thing. But now I tend to think Apple would just kill development on all the things that make Sun as unique and important as they are. Namely, UltraSPARC.

EVERYONE heard of OS X Intel builds. The last prediction to come out of Dvorak was Apple is going to switch to Windows and the moron cited Bootcamp as proof

Actually he was 100% right about Apple switching to Intel months before it happened.

It'd actually be rather funny if Apple announced the SWITCH to UltraSPARC. "Oh and you can re-compile your programs by checking the UltraSPARC box in Xcode"

Spout enough random things and I'm sure some of it is bound to become true at some point.

While Dvorak did get the Intel switch right once, he also got it wrong a half dozen times.

Does Sun sell that many sparc boxes these days? I thought the majority of their sales were now x86/x64.

It was like a soap opera in those days... I remember when I almost broke down and purchased a Windows box... NT 4 had just been released (which was actually rather cool at the time). I had purchased a Performa 6400 and a monitor for around 3K, and OS 7 was... um... interesting.

To sum up, I felt the 6400 was slow from day one, the OS was quarky... and I paid 2X what my friends paid...

Mac OS 7.5.1 should have been enough for anybody NEVER to touch a Mac again. I swear when connected to the net it was impossible to go 20 min without a hard crash (they all were hard crashes back then really). Thankfully 7.5.3 fixed many of them even though OS7 still looked like ass.

Comparing OS 7 to OS X is dumb.

Dude, I predicted Apple will switch to Intel chips months before Dvorak. The switch to Intel chips wasn't a suprise to me at all.

Apple to buy Sun doesn't make any sense to Apple's strategy. How do Sun help Apple break into the server space? The Xserves are great servers. Solaris good alternative to OSX Server? What does Java give Apple any advantages?
Bush Tax Cuts == Job Killer

Agreed, there's no advantage to Apple buying Sun. Besides, IT managers hate Apple. If Apple bought Sun, it would be the last straw for many IT managers to switch to Windows. While the UNIX admins themselves may not want to switch, they're under enough pressure from clueless IT managers now to switch to Windows.
