You can easily find a blueberry or tangerine clamshell on eBay for under $200. I've even seen the Indigo models with firewire going for less than $200. You'll be hard-pressed to find a blueberry or tangerine model with a 10GB drive - they came with 3GB or 6GB stock, and upgrading is a pain (you have to disassemble the entire laptop to get to the hard drive). Indigo, Key Lime, and the second generation of Graphite models all came with Firewire and a 10GB drive. The fastest clamshells were the 466Mhz Graphite and Key Lime. Finding one with an Airport card is also unlikely - sellers usually sell the Airport cards separately; that will set you back at least another $60 (and that's only if you're lucky).

You MIGHT find a Snow/Ice white iBook for $200 or less, but I wouldn't count on it. If your friend insists on an Apple laptop and has such a limited budget, he might have to give up on something (e.g. get a blueberry or tangerine model and use an external USB hard drive, which will be slow as hell on USB 1.1 but will provide more drive space).
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

in addition to shifuimam's suggestion within your price range you could also find either a powerbook lombard or a 400 mhz pismo. some came with 10gb hard drives. a 500 mhz pismo will likely fall out of your price range. the powerbooks also have an advantage as to being able to install a cheaper wireless card. (much cheaper) i am partial to the 466 clamshells, but they will likely fall outside your price range. some claim that the pismo's were the best laptop that apple ever made. good luck and be patient.

That's a great find - and you can bump it up to 10.4.8 if/when you get it!

Hi,

I just got a pismo on ebay for my mom for less than $200 shipped. Airport card, decent memory, etc. I think if you keep looking something will pop up.

The pismo in my sig I bought for $320 a couple of weeks back. I'd say if you can find a decent deal on a pismo, go for that. It's a good machine to start with (probably the best made mac laptop), and easily upgradeable. It's a joy to use!

Good Luck!

One more thing. How hard is it to put a new hard drive in this machine. And if it is not worth the trouble how fast would an external fire wire drive be?

The description is inaccurate. That machine has 128MB of RAM on the motherboard and one available slot. There is no combination of DIMMs that could result in 320MB. It could only have 256MB, 384MB, or 640MB.

It probably actually has 384MB. You could take that out and put in a 512MB DIMM to max it out.

Though would the hard drive be big enough? And still again how fast would an external fire wire drive be on this machine. Would it be unbearable like usb 1.1 or is it quick like the new machines?

actually, the g3/500 only had 64mb onboard, so 64 + 256 for a total of 320mb. enough to run tiger if you only use one program at a time, but swap the 256mb for a 512mb and it is a very usable machine for internet, mail, itunes, etc. of course the cost of a 512mb stick is almost half of your budget... best of luck.

I went back and checked MacTracker again. Some of the white iBooks had 64MB and some had 128MB. This must be a machine with 64MB. At present, DealRam.com says the lowest price for a compatible 512MB DIMM is $83.

To make this clear I do not want to go very far out of the price range. Less then 100 dollars because she is probobly going to want to upgrade the ram and get an airport card if the computer doesnt have one. You dont have to pm me with offers you can post them here. Unless the moderaters say otherwise.

I just got the 500mhz version of this from them. It was supposed to have a bad CD drive, but the one they sent works like a charm! The case is bad enough to need repainting, but you can't argue with cheap! Oh, and if you get that one and need a cd drive, LMK and I'll sell you one cheaper than they're going for on ebay.
