I am pretty excited about the new MacBook Air, and I'm about to order one, but I have a question that I can't seem to find the answer to:

Will I be able to upgrade to 4GB later, or do I have to do that when I order it from the factory? In other words, does it have a RAM slot, or does the 4GB model just have more RAM soldered on?

I avoided the last MBA because I don't think that 2GB is going to be enough in a few years, and I want to own this machine for longer than that.

From the keynote pics, it looked like the RAM was soldered directly to the motherboard.

So no expansion possible.

From the tech specs page:

Apple - MacBook Air - Technical specifications of the 11-inch.

2GB of 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM onboard (4GB maximum)

Onboard. Not upgradeable.

That sucks. We'll have to stock two models just because of RAM...

Yes, that sucks. Who wants a computer that is going to be dead in the water vis-a-vis upgrading? I usually own my laptops for 4 or so years, with a round of upgrades around year 2 (hard drive and RAM). Usually, those upgrades cost very little two years in.

I will be avoiding the "gimped" MBA.

Actually, "most" customers upgrade their machines exactly once - when they buy them.

They'll upgrade their OS when they have to (new iPod or iPhone), but that's it.

If you know you'll want to upgrade in three years' time (of course there's those too - just not as many), then the Air is not for you.
