We all know that once you go mac, you never go back, but:
When will you get a Macintel?
Edit: I should have added an option for: when the model I want comes out

Exactly... Although as I'm using a 500MHz G3 that day can't be all that far away

I'll wait till my Dual 1.8 G5 no longer suits my needs. Which will most likely be a while.

I probably would have already bought an Intel Mac mini if the graphics didn't suck so much.
However, I probably won't switch my main machine (iMac G5) until much more stuff is universal, or there are good substitutes. Not much point in switching, if Photoshop is actually gonna run slower on the new machine, and Virtual PC (or a reasonable substitute) is unavailable.
I will consider switching my iBook sooner rather than later, but not if it gets a crapola GPU like the Mac mini.

When my powerbook starts to suck and bore me. Or when I have to test universal binaries.
Maybe when apple releases a so smart and sexy notebook that I cannot resist (Resisting the MacBook Pro is very easy for me).

Depends on a few things for me
1. It will probably be an Intel Powermac
2. I might wait for OS X 10.5 to be shipping, depends when that appears
3. Other stuff that is coming like Blu Ray drives etc.
Probably in about 9 months, so Christmas 06 or after the 07 January Macworld Stevenote. Maybe before then if the Powermacs are out and running ok.
|
It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Well, if I buy an Intel laptop but keep using my G5 iMac, I'm not really switching, am I? So I'll be starting on Intel probably this spring or summer, switching to it when the G5 starts to seem pokey (hopefully I can hold out another ~2 years for a new desktop..)

My current Mac gear is fine for some time.
However, my gaming PC is showing signs of aging (no pci-express) so if Apple comes out with a compact desktop machine which runs Windows apps, I might get one around the time UT2007 comes out. (UnrealED isn't available for Mac OS X).
I really don't enjoy maintaining a separate gaming PC, so I'm hoping for advances in Wine/VirtualPC or as a worst case scenario, booting Windows.

I wont even consider it until ProTools goes universal. Looks like May will be the first update, I'll probably update in August after a few bug fixes.

Would like to see the majority of software be universal. Also would prefer to wait for Rev. B.

None of the above. My G5 will last for a while, and there's no compelling reason for me to switch. Ask again in 2 years.

I'm going to wait for the Rev B Intel iMac and then I'll take the plunge. Many apps will be universal by then, and the iMac should be plenty powerful.

When my PPC PB 1.5 gets outdated, I'll switch.. I estimate that in at least 12-18 months.

My next machine will likely be a multi-processor Opteron variant running a Linux distro.

The poll needs another option: "when my upgrade cycle next requires it."
I can see my PowerBook lasting me at least another two years. I won't have any desire to buy a new Mac, Intel or not, until then.

Same, with some exceptions. First, my monitor is much older than my Mac and if it dies, I'm not sure if I'd buy a new monitor or just get an iMac. Second, if an iMac or mini Mac comes out with a built in high definition DVR capability, I may need to get that
The transition to Intel doesn't affect my plans so much. I'll upgrade when I feel I need to.

Same here.
I may buy a Quad G5 after the Intel towers are released assuming I can get one for a good price. I'll stick with that for a while but once support starts to drop off I'll either be building an Opteron-or-future-equivelant box to run a Linux distribution or exploring another PowerPC platform like AmigaOne or Pegasos.
BTW; KDE 4 is shaping up to be really nice. Switching from X to it would not have many downsides.

Kinda off topic, but Intel and Universal Binaries. Do you think that all software will be Universal eventually, or will it eventually be Intel only?

4-5 years I'm suspecting.
The new machines would have to be mega-compelling for me to switch,
and I'm not an early adopter these days.
I'd need - 200 tracks of simultaneous audio, 120 instrument plug-ins
with 64 voices per plug in, render a Seti @ Home block in under 10
minutes, 250 frames per second video. You know, just kind of real
ridiculous stuff but at a normal price.
The DP2.5 I haven't even had a year, it will take a while before it
feels "too slow" to use.
