A Canberra man was forced to wrestle a kangaroo out his house after it jumped through a window and landed on his bed in the middle of the night.

Beat Ettlin's family were asleep in their suburban Garran home when they were awoken by the kangaroo early on Sunday morning.

Mr Ettlin says the animal initially crashed through the window and landed on his bed.

"Of course my wife was in the bed and my sick daughter who was not happy at this moment was with us and she went under the covers and covered themselves with the doona not to get scratched and not to get hurt," he said.

Mr Ettlin says he cornered the kangaroo in his son's bedroom and dragged it out of the house before anyone was hurt.
