Chipmaker Advanced Micro Devices, in an effort to help it diversify into new markets, has hired two senior engineers. Charles Matar, recently of Qualcomm, has been hired as AMD's vice president of System-on-Chip (SoC) development. Additionally, Wayne Meretsky -- formerly on the '90s-era Macintosh development team -- has been named Vice President of software intellectual property development, and will head software developments for the manufacturer's product lines.

AMD has suffered under the challenging economic conditions, and the simultaneous market shift to the "post-PC" market. Over 80 percent of AMD's income comes from the PC industry, and analysts expect a nine percent drop in revenue from the September-December quarter in its earnings report expected later today. In October, AMD announced a 15 percent reduction in the workplace, its second round of layoffs in less than a year. The two engineers are expected to be developing multiple SoC products, integrating several features into a single chip. SoC technology is used in tablets, embedded devices, and smartphones. AMD's SoC "Temash" line expected later this year.
