The US Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal of the verdict in the Mirror Worlds v. Apple lawsuit, reports say. In 2008 Mirror Worlds accused Apple of infringing on its patents via OS X's Spotlight, Time Machine, and Cover Flow features. Although Mirror Worlds was initially awarded $625.5 million in damages, that verdict was overturned in 2012. The company had hoped to get damages reinstated on appeal.

The initial Mirror Worlds complaint covered three patents. The company's appeal to the Supreme Court, though, was limited to just one of them.

Apple has largely avoided major damage payments in the lawsuits filed against it during the past decade. The company will soon have to start compensating parents for unwanted in-app purchases, for instance, but the total payout will likely be just a fraction of what plaintiffs like Mirror Worlds have demanded. Conversely Apple won a $1.05 billion judgment against Samsung in 2012, although the exact damages are scheduled to be retried.
