I have a friend with an older ibook and who's running 10.2.8. She wants to upgrade, but I thought I'd check that you can upgrade directly with Tiger. I didn't see why not but thought I'd check.

She'll back it all up, but upgrade would be the best option so she doesn't have to manually copy everything back one at a time. I always upgrade using clean install, but then I'm a bit more geeky than she is.

Thanks,

J.

Install process will verify that the existing System can be upgraded. Specs for hardware are the same for 10.2 and 10.4.

Remember, your friend could do a clean install followed by migration assistant move from the backup drive. If her iBook is an older G3, she may be better off upgrading to Panther due to speed concerns. But there's no technical reason not to install Tiger (other than the system not meeting the requirements, like the first and second revision iBook G3s do not).

You could also do a archive and install. All the data will still be there when done but you get teh benefit of pretty much a full install. I would recommend teh arichve and install or clean install over an upgrade any day. too many times I have seen flakey problems from people doing an upgrade versus one of the others.

yes yup. it's fine. But use the 'clean install; preserve settings' option for best results.

Thanks all. Her ibook has the minimum for tiger and she's going to get more ram soon. I don't live near her, so I was looking for the easiest option for her upgrade, although I can walk her through things as necessary by phone. Looks like archive and upgrade will be best unless I can get her to go for a clean install.

Cheers,

J.
