I have a 1.6GHz G5 with 2 200GB WD SATA drives and 1.25GB RAM. I have noticed the system becomes slow and the mouse will start to jump when I am downloading several items.
It usually happens when I am downloading 3-5 items regardless of the download speed. This doesnt seem right since my 12" powerbook handles teh same task without any problems. I have tried reinstalling the system and I had the same issues. Has anyone else had this sort of problem?
Its only with safari too. I can be transferring tons of data over firewire or bewteen SATA drives at much higher rates and you dont notice any degradation of speed. I would like to fix this soon, because its very frustrating.

Have you tried checking the activity monitor to see how busy the processors are? The mouse jumping is odd. Is this over airport or is it ethernet?

Cleared caches? I also hear those favicons can be a killer as well.

Safari hogs just so much of the system resources it drives me mad. It just gets worse the longer it remains open...
I have switched to Shiira instead. Vast improvement until they do something with safari...

Oooooh, nice. I hadn't heard of Shiira before, but I'm trying it now. Rather nippy, and I love the way it just nicks all of your Safari bookmarks

its over ethernet (100 base connection going into a 4Mbps Cable connection)
I have cleared the cache before, but it didnt seem to help. I prefer safari, but i keep considering trying alternatives. Maybe its time to act on it.

I have had much the same experience. I think it has to do with the way I use Safari, since not all my co-workers have the same experience. I keep 5-8 tabs open, never shut Safari down, and never shut my machine down. After awhile (a day or two or three), Safari becomes so sluggish, it is virtually non-responsive. Quitting and restarting the program seems to clear everything up (temporarily).
I like Safari, but I like Firefox better, so that's what I've been using...

Permanently deactivate the cache with Safari Enhancer. And if you have autofill for everything, go into preferences > others and edit the list down to a manageable length.
And this from osxhints.com:
This hack comes out of an interesting piece written by the Safari developer David Hyatt on the adding of timers to browsers. Apparently, in order to render obsolete flashing pages that can occurs when a webpage loads, (due to the client getting data from any number of sources; the stylesheet, various data sources, etc) web browsers are programmed with a little delay. The delay is, appropriately, conservative. But by adjusting a variable in the Safari preference file you can speed Safaris delay time up.
To try this (after backing-up, etc.) go to the terminal after Safari has quit and type:
defaults write com.apple.Safari WebKitInitialTimedLayoutDelay 0.25
Lots of previous threads on this and other tips to make Safari quicker.

yeah for one or two pages its fine but I use it pretty much the same way you do if only it were as fast as preview.
