Don't worry, I'm a mac guy, but my family remains faithful to Windows. On my mom's xp home machine, it refuses to start up. I get a black screen with the following text:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

I have no idea where I could copy this file from. let alone how to do it if I can't the the computer booted up(?)

I can do the system restore discs, but if we can get by without losing all our files, that'd be nice.

So any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
