"My old phone, one based on Windows Mobile 5.0, had almost every feature the iPhone has - point by point. The differences between the products (like the differences between their desktop cousins) have to do with how functionality is exposed to the user. In this matter, you'll find that Apple's product is almost infuriatingly superior."

If people ever wonder why Apple is still around, why the iPod is so damn successful, or why the iPhone was so hyped, the above quote is why. It's not that Apple can always invent new products, or bring something that's actually new to a market, it's how they present the product to the user.

Microsoft is completely clueless in that regard.

Completely agree especially with regards to the iPhone. It's interface was far superior to what I have ever used in any phone. I basically picked one up and knew how to use all of it's main features within 2mins. It's so intuitive. No, I didn't buy one because MacNN does not pay me enough!

Tycho, for those that don't know, is the Windows fanboy of Penny Arcade. A prideful SOB, to boot.

This says a lot.

That's okay, because MacNN's advertising sponsors are giving iPhones away!

I think the fact that both Gabe and Tycho switched from Windows to Mac in the last year really says a lot. Especially since they were both hardcore Windows fanboys for years leading up to it.

This is so true. Nail hit on head. I have been explaining to mates about the iPhone and all their phones do more-or-less all the iPhone does (and more - MMS, 3G etc) but it just has that je ne sais quoi with regard to the user interface etc. And I don't have one.

Ah, the irony: Microsoft has apparently announced that they're going to do a phone now, too! I predict it will be brown and boxy, probably called the ZuniPhone--but no, they couldn't use that name because of the disrespect to American Indians. Guess they'll have to think of some other name, which is really going to strain their creativity...

Good news is that it will play Windows Media files?

Bad news is they'll eventually have to pay $1.15 Billion to fix the problems of poor design and poor engineering...

Wait a moment: That's the best name for it! The XboxyPhone!

Just a very serious case of creative design envy...

iPhone in depth: the Ars review: Page 15

ArsTechnica gave a really good review with a similar conclusion regarding using the iPhone. iPhone got an 8/10 score, but mostly because it's tied to AT&T and the eMail client is apparently pretty bad.

It's extremely easy to use and almost entirely self-discoverable; the interface looks better than any other phone—smartphone or not—currently on the market, and it's just plain fun to use.

Yay for Apple. They're 2/3rds of the way to being half as good as Sony-Ericcson.

I was wondering how long it'd be since you came back for you to take your first shot at Apple.

We'll just ignore the fact that Apple charges $500 for a phone that's merely alright. When Sony-Ericcson releases a $5-600 phone I'm pretty sure it will be far superior.

Annnyyhooooo....

This is Apple's entire philosophy behind their products. Don't do something completely new, do something that's been proven to be what people want, and do it incredibly well. People are slowly coming to realize that with all of this technology we have these days, its not all about what the thing can do, its more about how it does it. Its something that you can't explain in words or in print. It has to be experienced.

You completely missed the point of the quotes.

I really, really, doubt it.

What if they added copper pipes to the iPhone?

Most of Sony-Ericsson's phones do cost between $5 and $600.
