Pretty scary shit. Bombs of increasing complexity blowing people up. Latest was mistimed/handled and went off at a fed ex facility.

Not sure why but this gives me D.C. sniper vibes

Was that the one left on the side of the road with a trip wire like an IED?

Yes, see link above. A serial bomber for sure. Unless different method means two bombers?

News reports this morning that police tracked-down the suspect and the person has died in an explosion during the stand-off.

I assume suicide.

I swear I read cops opened fire after the explosion. What the hell is the point of that?

His persona was fun when he just had money, sex, a penchant for audio and dabbled in the occult.

I missed the slide to the alt-right, not being a reader of the Political Lounge. I was surprised to see he’d gone off the deep end and was spouting the dumb bullshit. .

Well, it is interesting to note how the police thought about him before they knew who he was. I was reading how experts thought he must have been ex-military who is well-versed in bomb making, etc. In fact, he was a 23 year old, no military experience, person who worked in a semiconductor business before.

I've watched a lot of NCIS and one of the first things that Gibbs does is ask Ducky, a profiler who always gives a detailed analysis of the killer and his motives. In fact, in one case, Ducky, through his profiling prowess and numerous psychology classes taken, was able to guess the password of one such killer. The password was the name of the killer's music CDs and I believe he guessed it on his first try!

Criminal Minds had an episode exactly like that. I believe it was "Enter Sandman."

I wonder who came up with that profile. Most “ex-military” people are “well-versed” in a plethora of paperwork, chain of command silliness, and (usually) most of their military job - almost none of which actually involves creating explosive devices. Even people who USE explosives (demolitions, Explosive Ordnance Disposal, etc.) aren’t usually trained in creating explosive materials.

In my 23+ years on active duty, I was only rarely even trained on firearms use (essentially “Don’t Hurt Yourself With This Gun 101”). The concept that “military people” are all a combination of Rambo and Macgiver is both ludicrous and insulting.
