I recently donated my old LCIII to my niece, supposedly so she could run Appleworks to do her homework, without hogging the family 6500. (instead, I think she's clocking up major scores on Tetris and Crystal Crazy.)

This is a good machine, fairly stable, that I had upgraded to 20 MG ram and external 2x CD. It ran Quark and PageMaker happily, if somewhat slowly. I was sad to see it go, but sadder to see it gather dust now that I have an imac.

Any suggestions on how to network the 6500 and the LCIII together so that she can print without using sneakernet? (The two computers are not in the same room.) The LCIII doesn't have an ethernet card, and when I priced one out, yike! Would appletalk be enough to connect the two? My sister's printer is an Epson 640.

I love being the family Sysadmin...

elegant solution 1 - you can use those little appletalk boxes that hook to the mac with the serial port, and hook to each other using phone wire. why is it elegant? if you have phone jacks in each room, you can plug the phone wire from appletalk box a. into the phone jack. in the other room, plug the phone wire from appletalk box b. into that phone jack. voila! instant network. and no, youre not gonna get a busy signal. it makes use of some other wire is the phone wire.

fast solution 2 - if you have a really long serial cable that can reach inbetween the two computers, that is a little bit faster that the other solution. it's also not as pretty. but, just plug one end into the lcIII and the other end into the 6500.

as for sharing the printer, i'll let someone else awnser that.

well, the really long serial cable is out... it would need to be 20-30 feet long, the LCIII is upstairs.

appletalk boxes... hmmm.

Anyone else?

go to MacWorks.com if you're at all intrested in getting an LC-PDS ethernet card. 10BaseT cards run about $29. I've bought two of them, and they work great.

If the only problem here is printing, go to your local thrift stores; I saw a Stylewriter II today for all of $4.00. Sure, only B&W, but wotthehell???
