I have two questions regarding Firefox:
1. Whenever I download something that I just want to view (like a pdf), even if I select "Open With", it still downloads the file to the desktop along with opening it. How can I get it to just open the file?
2. When I want to open a pdf file with Adobe Reader I try to select it under "Open With" and it only lists "Preview (default)". It is not possible to select anything else. Anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks.

The "open" option still saves the file. The file still has to be downloaded to open it, but Mac Firefox does not save it to a temporary directory, but to the download directory.
To have Firefox use anything other than system defaults, it is necessary to use an extension to make it use the application of your choice. It is here:

Thanks for your help. Is there a way to have Adobe Reader open directly in Firefox like it does in Windows or Safari when you install the plugin?

Are you using the latest version of Adobe Reader? Support for other browsers was added in 8.0.1 (or something like that), otherwise the plug-in will only work in Safari. Note, I don't know if Firefox is still unsupported with 8.0.x or not - I don't use it.
The (better IMO as it is not slow as molasses to load like the reader plug-in) option is to download the SchubertIT PDF plugin and use that instead.
