It's becoming obvious it's beautiful simplicity wasn't a conscious decision on Notch's part.

So the hurricane kill the power for 2 hours, when I restarted the server all the water was frozen over and it was snowing in the desert. The hourly backup script to the rescue.

putting silverfish (! at least not earwigs, sigh) into blocks could make endless mining more exciting? Is that the intent? Yet incredibly more frustrating.

All I see it is as a way to make mining more time consuming.

yep. Do the silverfish at least drop anything useful?

hunger and experience bars are also annoying.

A hunger bar is the definition of tedium ("Whoops, gotta eat before I can keep mining another 500 blocks!"). I hoping the adventure update also introduces a boatload of granularity to gameplay options.

From what I could tell, in new creative you have infinite resources and can just build.

I popped in last night and made a few rounds just to see what was up. There should be tumbleweeds in the next version.

So, with the 1.8 pre-release "leak" I suppose now is a good time to bring up the future of the server (yes, even though it's been a ghost town the past month or two).

From what I've read 1.8s new terrain algorithms and other perks will be completely absent on previously generated maps... leaving us the option of starting fresh. While there are many projects I never finished, and I would miss the place, the thought of starting over, with us simultaneously exploring and claiming fresh territory (with hopefully better defined borders) is quite appealing. (It'd also be cool as we'll be much more dependent on each other for materials starting fresh)

As for our old world, I'd be quite happy if (everyone agreeing to start over) it was posted for download so we could all keep it as a memento of our time together.

So, who wants a world that possibly looks like this:

(Also I saw fence gates are finally in)

Edit: I'm wrong 1.8 will generate terrain on the old map, we'll just get some strange chunk errors. Starting fresh still strikes me as appealing however.

Some patch notes:

1.8 Updates: Features from the Pre-Release! - News - Minecraft Forum
- Biomes are MUCH larger and uniform than before

-Swamp biome was added to the list of existing biomes - look for vines on trees!

- Vines
Can be collected with shears, in the manner of leaf blocks. Vines will grow on any surface they are placed on

- Beef and Chicken added

- Strongholds - spawn once per world

- Ruins (basically strongholds on the ground)

- Giant mushrooms (Do not generate yet)

- Silverfish

- Creative mode
Allows flying, insta-break, unlimited items from an item palette, no damage, and more

- Abandoned mine shafts

- Endermen
Normally passive, these night-spawning mobs will teleport to (and attack) you if you look directly at them. When defeated, they can drop Ender Pearls, which presently do nothing

- Bow charging
Variable damage with charge, can also land critical hits. Additionally, attacks can crit if you hit a player or mob when descending from a jump

- Sprinting
Run faster, knock mobs back that are hit during a sprint - appears to deplete the hunger bar faster

- New high-quality Main Menu

- Chest animation (lids open, close)

- Player list on SMP; Server listings

- Setting gamemode on SMP "/gamemode username 0/1", 1 being Creative and 0 being Survival

- Hunger
Depletes slowly over time, can be filled by eating food. At 9 more more bars, you will regenerate health slowly.

- Eating animation

- Arrows stick to mobs

- Xp bar (Gain xp from killing mobs and other players)

- New lighting engine (Colored lights, smoother lighting)

- Clouds are now at the ceiling of the world

- Cave spiders

- Zombies drop rotten flesh, which can be consumed

- Watermelons (as well as watermelon and pumpkin seeds)

- Glass panes
These can be crafted at a crafting table by making a 3x2 grid of Glass Blocks - makes 16 panes. These panes can be placed in lines, corners and crosses, and they will adjoin with the nearest adjacent block.

- Iron Bars
Created by making a 3x2 grid of iron ingots at a crafting table. Can be placed in the same manner as glass panes

- Brick, Stone Brick stairs

- Smooth stone brick
Can be crafted by placing Stone in a 2x2 grid, makes 4 Stone Bricks

- F6 & F7 Adjust the time of day when pressed/held

Very odd, I was just thinking the other day how I missed this game, but with the scope of my unfinished projects, and all the new astuff being added I couldn't get excited about trying to retrofit new ideas into previous areas.

I would LOVE to start fresh at 1.8, but also I definitely would want the old map in my archives. If we start a fresh world I guarantee my involvement in the server again.

We should arrange is so as many of us as possible are there for day 0.

Putting the map up for download is easy. I could probably even keep them both running.

Heartily agreed.

I hope given the new terrain algorithms, its easier for us to just claim "islands" as territory.God help us on the first run however.

Me, I want my land to border a giant crevasse, so I may build a fancy bridge to my neighbor's territory.

---

The only downsides I've read is that NPC, Animal Husbandry, Quests & Bosses (at least) are being pushed back to 1.9, so that could potentially screw any NPC villages we discover in the interim (Forever Ghost town).

Couple of 1.8 observations (though I haven't played it myself).

This pre-release seems to be a beta for the actual release. Which would be why such astounding bugs as not being able to use a furnace exist.

Not digging the new lighting engine. Actually, most of it is pretty cool, but I just can't figure out the logic behind this:

Endermen die to rain (and water) apparently. Decent defense.

Chest animations are awesome.

Oh, I forgot what I wanted to mention. Endermen do move blocks you place. So they could deconstruct, say, a courtyard wall.

I look forward to creating roads to our kingdoms using the smoothstone brick.

Also, I need to come up with a different variation of my old walls and towers, else I'm just a hack.

Just looking at the screens is enough to get me a little giddy. I just hope my MBP works well with 1.8. I never came back after the Lion upgrade brought Minecraft to a crawl for me. I couldn't figure out the slowdown.

So, I'm reading snow/tundra biomes are pushed back until 1.9. Not sure if we want to restart without them. Blue balls anyone?

Also, it'd be nice if more than one person was working on this game.

They kinda act like zombie pigmen of the mining realm. In the video the guy doesn't attack them, but once his friend dies they all turn on him.

Yeah, so... ever since this happened, I've been having rubberbanding issues with the server. I logged last night and sek was having the same issues. It also seemed worse with more people on. I tried to sail to sek's and the rubberbanding made it unsailable and I encountered several chunk errors.

Don't want to complain, but it's pretty detrimental. Just straight mining will have several blocks mined blocks reappear and every couple minutes or so.

After you left the lad was considerably less of a problem, with one block reappearing every couple of minutes.

Well, it has taken until last night for me to find my first dungeon, nothing very interesting inside but I got a good haul of mossy cobble and the area around had several gold deposits. Plenty more areas to be explored at the bottom of my new mine. I suspect a large lava field is ready to be uncovered.

So, with the stuff that's being held back to 1.9 do we wanna revote on restarting on 1.8 or waiting til 1.9?

With so many other games to eat our time in mid to late November I don't know if waiting will be worth it. There's enough buzz now that might make a 1.8 refresh seem more worth it.

I think I agree. It would be cool to possibly settle in a snow biome, but it's not crucial. I assume animals are still spawning since mating still isn't implemented. NPCs aren't a huge deal.

I'll see what I can do about this, I think it has to do with speedstep of the CPU or the lower io performance of the flash drve vs a hd.

Thanks, Blaze.

1.8 is officially out, BTW.

Finished Biome code and New Biomes.[2]

Use for experience (skills) will be added.[4]
Animal breeding.[5][6]
Increased number of Strongholds per map (from three to unlimited).[7]

Upgraded on my MacBook, start new world, builds terrain, black screen.

Apparently I'm on openGL 1.2 and the game now requires 1.3. Gah.

I'm in LA so I haven't updated the server to 1.8 The server itself is still up but I don't have a client here. I've been dealing with crappyy slow wireless here and in the conference. Nothing like 5000 geeks to saturate rf spectrum.

There is still a huge lag on my MBP. When I jump and right click on the top of a block, it's too slow to catch up and place it.

In other words, if I try to make the single-block stacked tower...no-go.

Server or comp?

I've been reading that 1.8 is giving everyone worse performance than before (FPS-wise).
