I'm trying to get OS X to write to my external NTFS hard drive and was following along with this link:

NTFS-3G for OS X Revived

I installed NTFS-3G and MacFuse. The icons are mounted on the desktop but I still can't figure out how to write to the external HD.

Copying a file and trying to paste it to the ext. hd not working, the paste icon is greyed out

What am I doing wrong and how am I suppose to go about this?

Thnx.

Try physically dragging the file to the hard drive instead of copy/paste.

When dragging a file, I get error message, 'The item can't be moved because drive cannot be modified'. Also the permission on the drive still showing Readonly.

Thanks.

If you look at the drive in Disk Utility, at the bottom, by "Format" it does it mention "3G". If not hen it seems NTFS-3G is not mounting your drive.

There should be a command with the NTFS-3G package that enables the driver.
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

Also, Get Info on the drive and make sure "Ignore permissions" is checkmarked.

When I run the command, it ask for a password, then it say i'm not part of the sudoer group. I do have a regular user account I use. But also tried putting in my admin password, same result.

I'll check it out. Thanks for all the help.

You need to be logged in to an admin account to do that, not just use an admin password.
What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Silly me...after downloading the dmg files, I didn't actually install them. I was only opening the dmg.

I now have Read/Write access to the ntfs external drive...now to test the write part and make sure everything is okay.

Thnx to everybody for your help.

You sound like you might be coming over from Windows. I wanted to point out that on Mac OS X it's safe to run as an Administrator, it's not the same as running as an Administrator on Windows.

Administrators can't modify other accounts' information. The only account that can do that is called the "root" account, or "System Administrator." That is turned off by default. The root account is more akin to Windows' Administrator account.

Also, since you obviously have MacFUSE installed, I'd suggest you check out MacFusion while you're at it. It's just too damn cool and too damn handy to have around.

Actually I've had the mini since early '05 and Linux on a PC is my main OS at home but I do have XP for work purposes.

I just never really played around much with the mini until last year when I decided to make it my multimedia center for my new HDTV.

I would like to use NTFS on external drives for OS compatibility.

Thnx for the link.

Writing to the NTFS partition seems to be fine but I also ripped a video using Mactheripper directly to the ntfs partition. When I watch the same video using OS X default dvd player and VLC, the movie is jerky or pause every half a second.

Any ideas on why this may be happening?

Before hooking this external drive to the mini, I had it hooked up to Fedora 8 PC and made some ISO videos and watching them on the mini, the videos play normal.

Thnx.

I just ripped another video and saved it to the external drive and this one is playing normal...maybe the other one was a bad rip or something. I'll try ripping another one again and see what happens.

Thnx.
