Burnout Crash review: Accident prevention | Joystiq
Far too eve-handed. Needs the DNF treatment.

I... don't get this.

Finally! PS3 Firmware 3.72 arrives, changes everything | Joystiq
Next time you fire up your PlayStation 3, you'll be rewarded with a system software update -- version 3.72, to be exact -- which delivers "system stability during use of PS3 format software" as well as "improved" network services. And ... that's it!

PSA: PSN is down, Sony's 'working to resolve the issue' | Joystiq
PlayStation Network's down, we're sorry to say. It seems that Sony wasn't planning the outage, as a Twitter message from the company states that its "working to resolve the issue," without acknowledging what led to the sudden loss of service.

I'm blaming the outage on those "exclusive" Gears of War 3 servers until Sony says otherwise.

That's funny, I was going to say MS was causing it to force people to play GoW3 online

To be fair I never heard of the first one. Was it was PC? We have a pretty weak (or silent) segment of those players here.

The first one was PC and Mac. The second was PC and PS1 - which tells you about how long ago it was. It's a fairly well-known game though, I thought someone would recognize it.

I believe I played the first one on the Mac. The first one wasn't a FPS. It was a third-person view from above type of game I believe. I didn't know there was a second, probably because it wasn't created for the Mac.

I had the first one on the Amiga. THAT is how old that one is. I thought they would have done this like 10 years ago. The second was Syndicate Wars. Was on the first Playstation and PC. I never played that one though. The first one was great I had a lot of fun with that. Was all about the Persuadatron. Nothing like civilians with Minguns and UZIs to go into battle with you against a faction.

You had your four guys with custom augments and all and you basically had corps taking over the world.

Both the previous games were tactics simulators, and the point was that you were the guy in the back office somewhere directing your agents. They were all the same faceless people, and you could shoot people at will if you wanted to - basically, being completely amoral without it affecting things one way or the other. The new one turns this on its head - instead of being the guy in the office, you're the agent, and things are presumably all too real. This is another game entirely, IMO, just trading on the name, and its sad that they take the almost unique gameplay and replace it with something that has been done a million times before.

Forza 4 demo coming October 3, trailer reveals | Joystiq

Battlefield 3 Expansions Hit PS3 First
The Xbox 360 might be getting Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 expansion packs first, but the PS3 gets Battlefield 3 ones first.
Suck it X-Bots! Woohoo!

The publisher said today that beginning with Battlefield 3 expansion Back to Karkand, all "full-blown upcoming expansion packs" for the game will appear one week early exclusively on the PS3, "brought to you by Sony."
A week? All they got is a week? Pffffffff, hahahahaha!

Can't wait til this gen is over...

Resistance 3 highlights where the PS3 user experience goes wrong
The first thing I was asked to do after putting the disc into the system is download a 600+ MB update. Depending on how unknown factors come together, this update might take just a few minutes or, in my case, nearly 60 minutes. (Sony's problems with its update servers are well known and, to our knowledge, there has yet to be a technical explanation for why something as simple as a local proxy can boost speeds dramatically.)

With my patch downloaded, I was now ready to install this game and get down to the very important business of killing Chimera. Instead I was informed that I don't have enough free space on my 60GB system. The multiple (mandatory) installations for past games have caught up with me, and I can't help but feel somewhat frustrated—these were mostly games I wouldn't have installed anyway.
At this point, it's been well over an hour of updates, installations, and loading screens before I finally get to play the game. I actually played another videogame on another system to pass the time. But hey, single player here I come! Sadly, I would soon learn that my travails were not complete.
Then again, god knows what new horrors next gen will bring.

Considering how many PS3 games require installing, I kinda wish Sony would just bite the bullet and put an 8x BD drive in the newer PS3 and just let the early adopters suffer (more).

That's what your precious Sony has done for you, making you use phrases you loathe. Come to the Dark Side...

...Speaking of the Dark Side:
Rage requires 3 discs on Xbox 360, 8GB install on PS3, tolerance from fans | Joystiq
Rage will span three discs on Xbox 360 and require an 8GB install on PS3, id Software creative director Tim Willits has confirmed. It was rumored that Rage would have a large install and multiple discs on 360, but it seemed as if id was leaning toward a slim-and-trim two-disc set, stating that a separate multiplayer disc-swap would be "fail." id didn't have to pick a disc number for the PS3 version of Rage, effectively utilizing the Blu-ray drive to hold all of the game's gigs, something that Willits seemed very pleased about:
Like I said, can't wait for next gen. Not because I'm desperate to buy new hardware at the moment, but because I want the process of vetting to begin a new, so that in I have an inkling of where to go sooner rather than later (Think about it, if XBOX 3 launches in 2013, and you give it only a year of vetting, that's 2014 til your next console. That's three years from now, baby)

You are Changing. Three out of Ten Xbox 360 Gamers Are Now Also Zynga Gamers
Somehow, some-way, the number of people who play both Xbox 360 and Zynga games is rising sharply, according to research group Raptr, which claims to track more than 10 million gamers across multiple machines. They say that 30% of Xbox 360 players now also have played a Zynga game, up from 20% just a year ago.
I wonder what happened in the last year that might cause tha-oh that's right kinect.

Well, that certainly validates MSs strategy.

Drink the Dew, eat some Doritos, earn double XP time for MW3

Mountain Dew Game Fuel
20 oz bottles = 15 minutes XP time
12-Packs = 45 minutes XP time
Wal-Mart 20-Packs = 90 minutes XP time
32/44 oz fountain cups = 15 minutes XP time

There is some restriction on the total XP time you can earn. The maximum amount of time is 24 hours. That equates to 96 - 20oz bottles, or perhaps 16 of the Wal-Mart 20 packs. The Doritos bonus and Combat Cards should help reaching that one day maximum easier (or perhaps some dumpster diving).
Holy shit, that's a lot of Dew for 1 day's worth of XP!

I don't see any double XP weekends in the near future.

Battlefield 3's Oddly Browser-Based PC Beta
Perhaps I hadn't been keeping close enough watch on the chatter surrounding the PC beta test for Battlefield 3, but the last thing I expected upon launching the game through EA's Origin was to wind up on a web page.

...

Once in a match I tried in vain to find the options menu in order to tweak my graphics. Later I discovered that the options menu can only be accessed when you're in-game and alive. That means in order to change your audio, control, or graphics settings, you have to find a safe place to hide first.
That's an ...interesting UI choice.

How ViviTouch could change rumble technology | Joystiq
Rather than the one-note rumble we're all used to, I felt many different levels of vibration based on the action taking place. The demo of an engine revving was easily the most impressive. From the thrumming engine idle to punching the gas, I could actually feel the subtle crescendos of vibration.
Want.

Grown Man Hunts, Chokes Boy Over Call of Duty Game
During a round of Call of Duty, 46-year-old Mark Bradford (pictured) was snuffed out during an online match by a 13-year-old player. Instead of respawning and trying to avenge himself in-game, Bradford went to the boy's house and strangled him.
Probably sang into his mic while he did it, too.

Capcom undecided about PSN DRM News - PlayStation 3 - Page 1 | Eurogamer.net
"Sony has a form of network DRM that we have chosen to use on a couple of titles, really as much as an experiment as anything else, to see what the impact was," Capcom's US vice president Christian Svensson told Eurogamer.

"Inconclusive, frankly," he said of the results. "As far as we can tell, it neither helped nor hindered us.

"We continue to look at it on a case by case basis."
It's useless, but that won't stop them from gimping their games with it on a case-by-case basis. Fascinating.

It's also a testament to the fact that college sports market and the pro sports market in the United States can be completely different beasts. There are tons of people who are rabid college football fans who don't care at all about the NFL, whereas I'm inclined to pick up a new edition of Madden every few years but would never buy the NCAA game.

FIFA actually sells really well here too. I've had fairly limited time to play this week, but I'm already nearly done with my first Arsenal-rebuilding season.

[Incoming: side note that probably no one on this forum will care about]

I'm loving the inclusion of some players becoming dissatisfied with their current team as other teams show an interest. Alex Song (Arsenal defensive midfielder) is getting interest from Inter Milan in my career mode. Rumors leaked that he's wanting a transfer, but he denies it, saying, "I'm really not sure where these rumors are coming from. I haven't talked to anyone in the media. I'm just trying to play hard here with Arsenal."

In other words, it's just like real life for Arsenal.
