Finally got an iPhone (4S, so closer to 2011). I'd been holding off because the plan costs were ridiculous and I was using <15 min a month and probably not that many texts (a hunnerd?). So I finally found the Wal•Mart straight talk plan that was only $5 more than the Verizon data only plan I was using on my incredibly old Samsung Alias.

Aside from posting on Facebook from the shitter, what should I be doing/downloading for it? I already spent several hours last night trying to figure out the awfulness that is iCloud and creating custom ringtones. Today I made a dectet of wallpapers for it.

Carmageddon, of course.

Real Racing.

Is the Star Wars Arcade Falcon Gunner still available. If so, that's pretty neat, especially if you have a rotating office chair.

Pulse News Reader. I no longer read news sites on the Mac (it has helped that RSS functionality has been killed in desktop Safari).

Shazam.

Some manner of free flashlight app that uses the LED. SOOOOO useful.

That's pretty much all I regularly use, apart from the basics like YouTube app, Facebook, local-interest things like shopping portal apps, traffic stuff, public transport apps, taxi hailing services, etc.

I used an app that tracked information about my car, particularly gas mileage. So that was handy.

The eBay app - on Android, at least - is pretty awesome because it notifies me of when an auction I'm watching is going to end soon, so I don't forget about it.

Unfortunately you will likely discover that a smartphone is nothing more than the 21st century version of bringing the newspaper with you to the bathroom.
Sell or send me your vintage Mac things if you don't want them.

Yes, the traditional flashlight app. I had forgotten.

The biggest thing I'm trying to explore is augmented reality apps, but there aren't many free ones (justly so). I picked up an augmented basketball game which has my curiosity.

My fancy schmancy car, which I just paid off which helped accelerate this upgrade, already does that for me.

Oh my. I've been long gone from eBay since the p-p-p-p-powerbook days.

I have plenty of Far Side compendiums for that. Though I will still send a Facebook update from the can to christen the phone properly.

Oh, if only there was a brain teasing casual guessing game for the iPhone I could recommend to you.

Oh wait...

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/face...541351719?mt=8

Also:
Ignore Apples podcast app get Downcast
Try Clear for to do's
Do twitter with Tweetbot
replace the built in calendar app with Fantastical
Store your secret passwords with 1password
Control your apple TV with Remote

and then compliment your face guessing game with a car, a logo and an album cover guessing game.

Welcome, I just got mine a year ago.
some i find useful... similar to what spheric said

flashlight
flightview - checks flight times/delays/gate# etc
groups app / gcontact lite - categorizes your contacts by work, projects, circles, family whatever
floodmap - tells me if im in a flood zone
myradar or something for weather.
Hailacab - hails a cab...
iSpreadsheet - excel etc..
Onavo extend - this one compresses data to save on your data plan, necessary for cheap $30/mo phone plans that only give 300MB/mo; it worked great for a while then I deleted it when they updated it and vpn was always on. I might put it back or find a new one. Having trouble living without it.
astronomy apps that you aim at the sky and they draw the constellation lines.

Well that's my boring list...
Been looking for a good manual camera app but havent found one.... Also looking for a good lecture recording app, and 360 virtual tour picture app.

forgot...
Some things I dont have but could come in handy:

Pandora radio
barcode scanner
distance measuring, you take a picture of something and it tells you how far away it is as long as it's on the same height plane.

Are you new to smart phones? Something I started realizing I could do and has been really handy... is use the camera in place of a fax/scanner for documents and signing.

Dropbox, so you don't have to figure out the awfulness that is iCloud.
The new Mac Pro has up to 30 MB of cache inside the processor itself. That's more than the HD in my first Mac. Somehow I'm still running out of space.

Well, I was using iCLoud just to sync contacts and what not. Then the damn thing threw a shit fit when I decided I didn't want my iCal synced up – why would it not give you the option to keep it on the Mac and not the cloud?! (Instead it deletes it off your Mac)

This thread does bring to mind an important question: How much do you guys think you've spent on apps? Given that I'm joining 2007 now, it might be apparent that I am either cost conscious, frugal, or a complete cheap-ass. I did have a gen 2 iPod Touch but knowing that I might not completely adopt it, I wisely decided not to spend any money apps (It fell into disuse after I went to an all n network, and only was revived recently when I started going to the gym).

Obviously, I see myself using the iPhone a lot more (and consistently), but I really question what kind of app I'd really be using frequently (or is unique enough) that a free version wouldn't suffice.

---

Semi-related, but I'm kinda of astounded that my new 4s only has twice the internal memory of the 2nd gen iPod Touch that predates it by three years (Both are base models). I don't need the phone to carry my music exclusively, but between apps, a smattering of music for the gym and car, and a few random videos I've already killed half the storage. And I was trying to be judicious with the latter two. Is solid state memory still that expensive?

I've only spent money on one single app - Dapple. It's annoyingly addicting, and I really wish there was a clone for Android.

Racking you on solid state is one of the ways Apple keeps high margins.

How much memory in your phone?

I doubt it.

Edit: Syncing three or four playlists was apparently too much. 3.7 GB Music. (1.3 GB Video, apps the rest, I imagine)

I, uh, don't think so. Like I said I'll only be using this at they gym or in the car if I forget my iPod. The nature of straighttalk cheap-ass plan makes it inadvisable to use it for streaming.

Too bad - I say get a slightly better plan where you can stream a little in non-wifi areas. Oh, and recommend to your gym that they get wifi for their customers - honestly, that should be a gimme no matter where you are in North America.

Plex is highly, highly recommended in that case. Any movie or music on your server available at all times. It's great.

I was going to comment that my gym playlist was probably one of the smallest but then I realized a streaming service might provide superior working out playlists, so the idea still had (if not more) merit.

Anyway, not a big deal seeing as I have plenty of space still. Just wondering how long it will take me before I start having to make hard decisions.

Not much, a lot are free and the rest are cheap. Just make sure to read the reviews to make sure they actually work alright before your purchase and you'll be fine.

Battery technology hasn't caught up with electronics technology; the more you use it the faster it wears out. Combine that with memory issues, I decided to keep all music on old ipod and don't have more than a few secs of video that I take. That should free the phone up a bit.

So my gym does have wi-fi, the freakin' iPod Touch couldn't join. I don't blame Apple for not including n (draft-n, to be specific) in the early Touches, but jesus did n become the standard quickly (no doubt thanks to companies like Apple including draft n in iMacs as early as 2007) rendering the damn thing useless.

What does battery tech have to do with solid state storage?

Congrats, it's a great phone, and it sounds like you got a great deal. Get Carmageddon & Angry Birds Star Wars for fun... If you need Business apps - DocsToGo, DropBox; EQ 10 is an awesome music player with great EQ features... Tango for video chat... jesus, there are too many apps, really... not sure if you're into navigation but Theodolite is pretty cool to use. PS Express is a free mobile photoshop app, there's 8mm for cool but useless old timey movie effects.

Almost forgot the books - Stanza has a free reader, but usually you can find the book as a stand alone app (not all are free!) - I recommend The Book of Five RIngs and The Art of War to hone up those killer instincts you're going to lose from playing with your iPhone for 20+ hours a day. cheers!

ps Stick to wired syncing. I do, however, recommend the Find My iPhone feature.

Which car maintenance app do you use.?

I'm looking for some app to keep track of maintenance records, reminders and so on but can't find anything I really like. Am I better off to just use Bento or Filemaker Pro on the Mac and then sync it on the iPhone.?

As for me, apparently KIA graciously provides their own official app I'll have to download.
