It's been a god damned epidemic lately.

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/...l-nighter.html
A black graduate student at Yale University says a white student called campus police on her after she fell asleep in a common room in her dorm while studying earlier this week. The 34-year-old graduate student, Lolade Siyonbola, said she was taking a nap amidst working on a “marathon of papers,” when around 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, a white female student flipped on the lights of the common room, told Siyonbola she had no right to sleep there, and then called the police. Yale later said the student had reported “an unauthorized person in the common room.”

When the officers arrived at the dorm, Siyonbola, who is pursuing a master’s degree in African Studies, recorded the encounter and posted a 17-minute video online. “I deserve to be here. I pay tuition like everybody else,” Siyonbola told the officers. Siyonbola, at first, refused to give the officers her ID, unlocking her dorm room door instead to show she had appropriate access to the building, before relenting and handing over her ID. The encounter dragged on, however, as the officers struggled to verify the student’s ID, which, the university later said, contained a different, preferred name than what was in the school’s official records. “I am not going to justify my existence here,” Siyonbola said during the exchange.
Well, I'm sure the person who called it in wasn't raci–

“This is exactly what is the problem with Oakland today,” Snider said. “This lady wants to sit here and call the police on them for having a barbecue at the lake as if this is not normal.”

The woman tells Snider that charcoal grills are “illegal” in that part of the park, and she calls police and threatens the black family with jail.

“She said that we were trespassing, we were not welcome, and then she turned back around and said, ‘Y’all going to jail,'” said Snider’s husband, Kenzie Smith.

The family argues about park rules with the woman for about 10 minutes as she stays on the phone with dispatchers, and the woman complains about the police response time.
Snider, who is white, mocks the woman as “the f*cking coal Nazi police,” and repeatedly asks her to return a card the woman took from her hand, and then the woman tells dispatchers the family is threatening her after she becomes impatient with police.

She follows the white woman across the street to a convenience store, continuously asking her to return the card, and the white woman begins to cry but does not return the item.

“I’m being harassed,” the white woman says, sobbing, about 23 minutes into the video.

An officer asks Snider to back off the woman, and asks both women about the incident.

“I reported over two hours ago some people were illegally grilling in the park with a charcoal grill where they’re not supposed to, I was waiting there for a response because I was told they’re coming,” the woman says through sobs. “After two hours, I just called back the non-emergency line, and in the interim these people came up and started harassing me, physically pushing me.”

Snider denies her claims, and says she just wants her card back.

Barbecues were banned about three years on the eastern part of the lake, after complaints about trash and a toddler was burned by improperly disposed charcoal, but police did not cite the family.

Epilogue: http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefi...e-woman-called
Area residents had a massive cookout at a park in Oakland, Calif., just two weeks after a white woman called the police on a black family for setting up a charcoal grill in the same park.

Leaving your car running while black

Looks like we need to add not leaving your car running while you make a quick purchase is now something we have to add to our “ish Black folks can’t do” thanks to a video coming out of Sacramento.

According to the Sacramento Bee, Craig Williams, was said to be inside the South Land Park convenience store and left his car idling outside. When Williams returned to his car he was confronted by a police officer who shut off the ignition and told him he was violating several laws including having loud music playing.

Williams’ girlfriend started recording the interaction with a cellphone. The officer grabbed Williams’ arm, and pushed him into the wall at the store and then pushed him to the ground. Williams can be heard saying: “I give up, I give up,” while trying to position his arms so the officer could arrest him.

Williams was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and leaving the ignition key in an unattended vehicle. He was later released.

Justin Ward, Williams’ lawyer, told reporters that his client didn’t believe the idling ordinance was legit.

The city code enacted to support a national campaign by the U.S. Department of Justice to curb auto thefts, a September 1967 article in The Sacramento Bee reported.

The Sacramento police is already under fire following the shooting death of unarmed Stephon Clark who was gunned down by officers in the backyard of his grandmother’s home while holding a cellphone.

The Sacramento NAACP claims that Williams should not have been arrested at all.

The District Attorney’s Office has opted to drop the charges “in the interests of justice,” according to the media release.

Refusing to sign a traffic ticket while black ...

... because she did not, in fact, "fail to stay in her traffic lane" as the video clearly shows.

Police officers in Alpharetta, Georgia are under internal investigation after disturbing dashcam footage of them dragging an elderly woman from her car during a routine traffic stop surfaced.

According to ABC News, the Alpharetta Police Department posted the troubling video and included a statement from Public Safety Chief John Robison. The video, taken from the squad car dashcam shows the May 4 incident in graphic detail.

Rose Campbell, was reportedly pulled over and issued a ticket for failure to maintain her lane, according to WSB-TV. But when Campbell refused to sign the ticket, which is against the law in Georgia, Officer Michael Swerdlove told her she was under arrest.

Things escalated when an officer aggressively began screaming and cursing at Campbell. He then can be seen grabbing Campbell and trying to pull her out of her vehicle.

“You’re not in charge, shut up and get the f— out of the car!” he’s heard saying on the video.

Rose Campbell can be heard crying out for help from a supervisor.

Campbell spoke with WSB and shared how she was feeling during the traffic stop.

“I just panicked. I felt like my heart exploded,” said Campbell, 65, in an interview with ABC’s Atlanta affiliate WSB. “I didn’t expect that in America. I didn’t expect that in Atlanta. I didn’t expect that especially in Alpharetta.”

“We strive to be a transparent department. If we are going to be 100 percent transparent, that means that we also must be willing to share with you any major concerns that arise regarding employee performance and behavior,” Robison said in the video. “There are aspects about this video that simply do not represent our organization.”

At one point in the video there are at least five officers on the scene and Campbell is continuing to cry for help, and repeatedly asking to see a supervisor.

WSB has identified the aggressive officer in the video as “Officer Legg,” who was one of the responding officers.

Campbell told WSB thursday that she doesn’t think the police officer should be fired, but that she wants better training. She also said she wants an apology from the city and the police department.

And while Campbell has retained civil rights attorney, Mutepe Akemon, she said she wasn’t sure if she’d take legal action.

Regarding the case above, the following is the resignation letter of the "officer" in question. I'll let it speak for itself.

Dear Chief Robison,

Effective immediately, and regrettably, I quit.

Since 1995, I have dedicated myself to public service. As you know, I retired from the military and served in law enforcement in Florida before moving to Georgia. Unfortunately, an incident on May 4, 2018 led me to write this letter to you.

I feel I acted appropriately and the way that I was trained when I arrested Ms. Campbell. As you saw on the video, Ms. Campbell almost drove into another Alpharetta police officer. She was lawfully stopped for failing to maintain her lane. Although she denied the traffic violation, the officer issued her a ticket. Due to her behavior on the side of the road, and after noticing the car had dark tint and there was someone in the backseat, the officer asked her to get out and at some point advised she was under arrest. Ms. Campbell did not obey a lawful command. The officer was unable to subdue the driver and requested for backup officers to come to his location. Numerous Alpharetta police officers arrived, including me.

At the time I arrived on scene, I saw officers unsuccessfully trying to effectuate the arrest of Ms. Campbell. Also, I noticed the vehicle was still running and from my experience, I considered the vehicle to be a possible weapon, so I neutralized it by turning it off. There are uncounted incidents of officers being dragged down the street by motorists who are being arrested. The officers were still not able to complete the arrest of Ms. Campbell as she was still in the vehicle and holding on to the seatbelt. I did what was necessary to complete the arrest by raising my voice and using verbal commands using heavy control talk with profanity. It worked instantly and she exited the vehicle immediately! When the other officers did not immediately restrain and handcuff her I then freed her from her grasp on the seatbelt and she was escorted to the police vehicle. All force ceased and the arrest was now over. I judged her actions to be passive resistance and used very limited force to end a multiple minute encounter with the suspect.

Maybe I should not have used profanity, but its immediate effectiveness is not questionable and I do believe I acted reasonably under the circumstances.

I do not feel I will get a fair internal affairs investigation from you due to the comments you made on Facebook prior to interviewing any of the other officers, or even me. Rather than let an independent agency or officer review my performance, you have all but issued a statement finding my actions unworthy, unreasonable, and in violation of policy. I will justify my actions when given the opportunity to do so through a POST investigation, but will not subject myself to the investigation of an agency Chief who would rather care about public perception and political correctness over officer, suspect and the general public’s safety. I remind you that I did not make the traffic stop, did not begin the use of force, did respond with emergency equipment, did properly analyze the situation, did render the vehicle safe, did get the suspects attention and out of the car, did effectively get her detached from the seatbelt, and did get her handcuffed with limited force. The encounter had been going on with multiple officers responding with emergency equipment leaving the general public unprotected while the encounter continued. In conclusion, I feel my decisions ended a volatile situation quickly with very limited force and got everyone off the highway and back into service.

Dakar posted about the white woman who called the cops on the black family having a BBQ in a public park in Oakland. In addition to refusing to return a card she snatched out of the woman's hand who was recording her, this is another detail from the article he cited that is quite um ... "illuminating".

So after arguing with the black family for 10 minutes or so about whether or not they could BBQ in that location they eventually went about their business. But this entitled chick spent 2 hours standing there and waiting on the police to show up. Lied about them "harassing" her when it was the other way around. Lied about them "physically pushing" her. And then tried to play the victim when the cops finally did show up. The video is 24 minutes but it's worth watching in its entirety.

Oh yeah, her waiting two hours for cops to arrive is some real dedication to concern trolling them. The only way it could have ended better was if the BBQ had naturally ended by then.

Edit: Actually she may waited that long either to try and show them who's boss after they gave her shit, or to save face after having waited too long.

Yes and no. It was ok to BBQ in the location. Just not with charcoal. But there was no sign. At the end of the day this woman's behavior was petty and entitled. At best.

Oakland resident Onsayo Abram was setting up the barbecue that morning when he said the woman began to argue with him over the use of the grill. Abram said the woman called Lake Merritt "my park" and told him, "you guys shouldn't be here, you shouldn't be doing this."

"She walked up, and she was telling me that it was illegal and against the law to have a charcoal grill at the lake," Abram told SFGATE of the incident. "I proceed to tell her, 'Hey, there's not a posted sign. I believe I'm in the correct area. Go on about your day and leave me alone.' So she said, 'No, I'm not gonna leave you alone. I'm gonna need you to shut this down, or I'm gonna call the police.'

"I'm like, 'Do what you need to do,'" Abram recalled, "I'm gonna continue to enjoy my day."

The grill in question was in one of six designated barbecue areas for Lake Merritt, KRON 4 reported. Three locations are designated for charcoal barbecues, while the other three are for non-charcoal grills.

Abram's grill happened to be in a non-charcoal location, but he said even just the weekend prior there were groups barbecuing with charcoal in that same area.

Abram typified the stranger's attitude as rude, but said she didn't use any foul language, telling the group that "we weren't welcome at the lake." When asked if he felt the incident happened based on race, Abram affirmed it and said, "I felt the energy and felt that it was really directed toward me."

According to him, the woman continued to hang around for about two hours, when his friend Kenzie Smith arrived. After witnessing the woman's behavior in trying to get the group to leave, Smith contacted his wife, Michelle Snider, to tell her what was happening. Snider, who is white, was the one who approached the stranger and shot the video.

"I started ... calling her out," Snider told SFGATE. "If you're here this long, is this really about charcoal and the police, or is it really because you don't want two black men having a barbecue? ... I just didn't see any reason why there was a threat."

No, but the police didn't issue a citation, which speaks volumes. If the lady was really concerned she could have pointed them to one of the areas of the park that did allow for use of charcoal.

And because Black Twitter has no chill the memes have gone viral. Just a sampling of the hilarity that has ensued.

But this one is real. The black residents in the neighborhood had a massive BBQ in that same spot in an epic "f*ck you!" to this woman.

One of my neighbors often leaves her car idling on winter mornings, to warm up. I've been tempted to write "FREE CAR" on the rear windshield. This wouldn't actually work - she keeps it too clean for window dust to show letters.

She has never been arrested for warming her car up unattended. She's also white. I'm sure there's no connection. Oh yes, this isn't in Sacramento either.

I have never heard of it being illegal to leave your car running while you go into a convenience store. Even from a theft prevention standpoint the law makes no sense in the age of keyless cars. You can easily leave a car running and lock the door with the FOB. But let’s keep it real here. The guy wasn’t arrested because of this alleged “violation”. He was arrested because he dared to question the “officer“.

From Good Housekeeping. Although it’s about warming in the winter, as with any law it apply 365 days a year. As with any law, the cops can use it to screw with you.
https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/lif...r-idling-laws/

It doesn't even matter how long your car is running, most states consider idling an automatic misdemeanor. Even cars that have an automatic start feature are against the law in some states, according to Lifewire. (Hey, don't kill the messenger.)
The laws are aimed at reducing vehicle emissions.

This might not be the place to mention it but its about racism in America so I'll take my chances.

I've noticed a few of things recently that have bothered me. The smallest one is that some things perceived widely as being positive are starting to feel a little patronising. I enjoyed Black Panther, it was a decent movie. It wasn't as amazing as everyone made out. Not as a movie. I appreciate that it has done a lot to promote black role models and such but like I say, I wonder if the hype has gotten so much that anyone else feels its a bit patronising. On a related note we have Black Panther and Black Lightning lately and the 'Black' in both names feels a bit patronising too. Its a wonder we don't have Black Falcon and Black Iron Man instead of War Machine/Iron Patriot. Maybe I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill.

Second thing was, I went down a youtube rabbit hole and watched a bunch of clips from Hardcore Pawn. Entertaining nonsense and I'm well aware that they are paying "customers" to go completely OTT and get themselves thrown out, but it (perhaps inadvertently) paints black people in a bad light. The people in question always get furious that they aren't given the cash they wanted, or that they can't get an item they pawned and didn't make payments on. They are just made to look like total morons who think they are entitled to whatever. It really feels like it plays into conservative entitlement stereotypes and the people being paid to perpetuate probably aren't aware because as individual actors they probably aren't seeing this wide message they are helping to deliver.

Lastly I watched this video which really ought to be innocuous:

I couldn't help but notice that while the others ran the spectrum from cute to supportive, to nagging to random nonsense, both of the tweets from black celebrity Mom's were demanding expensive material things. Again, its a small thing but if I spotted it, it must be pretty obvious.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Because naturally people who smoke weed choose to put it on their windshields as they are driving down the street.

A man driving through Winfield, Kan., went live on Facebook during a traffic stop after cops told him he was being pulled over for allegedly failing to signal a turn within 100 feet. But what should have been a citation or warning led to Rudy Samuel being detained because of “vegetation” on his windshield.

The incident occurred last Sunday and when the cop told Samuel that he noticed the flora on the windshield, Samuel couldn’t believe what he was hearing, because it was just tree debris. The unidentified cop told Samuel that he’s going to test the “vegetation” and Samuel informed him that he doesn’t even smoke."

And that’s when things took a left turn.

The officer returns from his car—without testing the “vegetation”—and tells Samuel to get out. Samuel says he wants the officer to run the test first.

“I’ll test it here in a little bit, OK, I ain’t got to test it right now,” the officer replied. When Samuel asked the officer why does he have to get out, the video then shows the officer forcibly removing him.

Although Samuel is no longer holding the phone to capture the video, the cop can be heard saying that the car is going to be searched. Samuel states that he does not give them permission. You can also hear Samuel telling the officer he has a legal firearm in the middle console of his car, and then the video stops. Samuel said it was because the cop turned off the recording.

“Yea straight stereotyped me he grab[bed] my phone I told him he better get a warrant for it so he powered it off,” Samuel wrote on Facebook.

According to CT News, Winfield’s police Chief Brett Stone says that the incident is being investigated. Of course, no drugs were found, and Samuel was sent off with just a warning and his life.

My car, my lawn, my house--my everything is currently covered in tree flowers and pollen. It does not resemble weed or pharmaceutical herbs. Unless it is obscuring the windshield (like people who don't clear their cars of snow), I just don't even get this as a plausible excuse.

It's getting to be so blatant that "plausible" excuses aren't even necessary anymore. There are simply way too many people in the population at large who are not just comfortable but apparently supportive of state sanctioned harassment of people of of color by law enforcement "officers".

I thought it was underwhelming too. Although I realise this is a minority view. I did have some fundamental issues with it's "black positive" depiction. Principally the idea that after thousands of years of supposed technology driven advancement and an obviously complex society, the best way the Wakandan's had of deciding who should rule the most powerful nation in the world was to line up on a rock with cod Lion King chanting and hit each other with spears, So much so that when the evil baddy turns up and wins by killing the rightful king, he instantly gains instant loyalty because, hey tribal Africans, whatcha gonna do.
When he came to the throne room he should have been laughed out of town.

I feel maybe some of this behaviour is a result of increasing feelings of marginalisation by white working class. BBQ woman has taken her stand on the idea that "these people" have somehow taken something that she wouldn't be allowed to, in this case a BBQ on a piece of land that she would not be allowed to BBQ on, but her real issue is that she has come to believe that no one is standing up for her. The more media attraction Black Lives etc gain the worse the world appears to people who feel marginalised and left behind.
They complain that if they were to set up White lIves, or White Power movements they would be racist (they would be), and since they aren't they overreact when confronted with their worst fear, a black person having something they no longer have.

People live in the world they think they live in not the one they actually do, and I'm sure white people (me certainly) really struggle to imagine a daily regime of petty and often automatic racism, especially since in so many ways the word treats everyone so much more fairly than it has ever done before. But perception is key.

There's a scene in the excellent Neflix documentary Flint where a black woman is arguing with a white police officer, the black woman contends that its all racist since all the police are white, despite being told and we can see that most of the officers are in fact black. Never the less I am sure that afterwards in her mind all the officers will have been white all along. We are victims of our own constructs in life.

I don't know how you solve this other than waiting it out or education, but pandering to white fear of a black(er) world wont solve it, only make it worse.

This is what I thought.

Also, BBQ woman took it too far and needed to let it go, but your point is excellent. There are those that get away with things, and those that follow the rules, and it can be annoying to be a rule follower and see someone else get away with what you wouldn't. The celebratory huge BBQ that followed was rude flaunting of the rule. If no one is going to enforce that rule, then put up signs saying so.

That's a great point - I think it highlights their respect for tradition, the way they maintain their culture irrespective of pressure from the outside world, and the respect they have for their ancestors. The same way that the "modern" buildings in their large city still resembled more...traditional...African architecture.

I think a main point in the movie was T'Challa realizing that his father was imperfect and made mistakes and coming to terms with that. I'd say it's plausible that combining that realization with seeing what can go wrong, that they'd reconsider the tradition of trial by combat. Clearly T-Challa is open to breaking thousands of years of tradition by initiating outreach and sharing their technology.

I don't think this is a "white working class" issue given the background of Dr. Jennifer Schulte ... aka "BBQ Becky".

Jennifer Schulte has been identified as the woman who called police on black people barbecuing at an Oakland park. Video of the incident went viral and led to the "BBQ Becky" meme.

3. Schulte Has a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering From Stanford, but the University Says She Does Not Work There, Disputing Reports That She Is a Professor

The 41-year-old Jennifer Schulte, whose name has been in some reports misspelled Jennifer Shulte, graduated from Stanford University in 2006 with a Ph.D in chemical engineering, according to her now-deleted Linkedin profile. That detail and her use of the name Dr. Jennifer Schulte on social media has led some to believe she is a professor or otherwise employed by Stanford.

But the California university distanced itself from her on Twitter, writing, “According to our records, a person by this name earned graduate degrees at Stanford more than a decade ago. She is not employed as staff or as a faculty member.” An entry on a Stanford website shows that she was part of the James Swartz Research Group in the chemical engineering and bioengineering department.

Schulte is a North Dakota native and attended the University of North Dakota for her undergraduate degree in chemical engineering. She has lived in Oakland since 2006.

4. She Works as an Air Quality & Climate Change Specialist

Schulte works as a senior project manager at an environmental resources and services company in Oakland, according to her Linkedin profile. Her work focuses on air quality. She is also a climate change technical specialist. She previously worked at Horizon Water and Environment, URS Corporation and Environ International Corporation.

An announcement for a 2016 meeting of the American Petroleum Institute shows that Schulte gave a talk titled “OEHHA Revised Risk Assessment Methods: Developing a Facility Game Plan” for the organization. “Dr. Jennifer Schulte is a Senior Project Manager with ERM based in Walnut Creek, California. She has 10 years of experience as an air quality and climate change specialist, and is a recognized expert in the fields of air quality, emission estimation, air dispersion modeling, health risk assessments, and climate change impacts,” the website said. “Dr. Schulte has conducted complex projects throughout California, the United States, and some international locations involving air emission inventories, air dispersion modeling, health risk assessments, and climate change analyses for numerous clients including commercial and residential development projects, ports, transportation, refineries, and various other industrial areas. She conducts air quality and climate change analyses for regulatory compliance, environmental studies required for CEQA and NEPA, and litigation support.”

The Irvine, California, city website shows that she was part of a team that prepared a supplemental environmental impact report as part of a city project.

Black bikers in Myrtle Beach? Heavy police presence and intentionally created traffic jams to discourage attendance. White bikers in Myrtle Beach? Crickets.

The NAACP has joined with a couple and another man to sue the city of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and its police department over what they deem the discriminatory treatment of thousands of black motorcycling enthusiasts who descend on the city for “Black Bike Week” on Memorial Day weekend each year.

As it happens, there are two motorcycle festivals held in Myrtle Beach during May. A week before the Atlantic Beach Bikefest, aka “Black Bike Week,” the city hosts the Harley-Davidson Spring Rally, aka “Bike Week,” which is primarily attended by white motorcycle clubs—those pillars of community not known for violence at all.

According to the federal lawsuit (pdf) brought by Cedric and Leslie Stevenson of Suwanee, Ga., and Simuel Jones of Chicago, the city of Myrtle Beach institutes a strict and burdensome traffic plan (a one-way, 23-mile loop, taking traffic outside of the city and back) as well as a heavy police presence only during Bikefest.

There are no traffic restrictions in place for Harley Week, although the two events are similar in size, scope and incidents, according to Anson Asaka, associate general counsel of the national NAACP and one of the attorneys in the lawsuit.

“Basically, it comes down to equality and justice,” said Asaka to The Root. “We have a situation where you have two bike festivals, one which is predominantly white and then a predominantly African-American event … but the city treats the events separately and unequally.”

The PDF indicates it was filed three months ago, on Feb 27, 2018. The bike week is presumably going on right now. Has there been any development in the case, such as the requested preliminary injunction against weird traffic routing?

It appears Myrtle Beach didn't receive a preliminary injunction. Linked from their front page, Memorial weekend traffic plans sound familiar.

In case anyone was wondering .... Driving While Black is still a thing.

Nearly four years after protests in Ferguson raised concerns about racial profiling of blacks in Missouri, a report from the state attorney general shows that African-American drivers are 85 percent more likely to be pulled over than whites — the highest percentage in the 18 years the state has compiled data.

Attorney General Josh Hawley on Friday released his office's annual Vehicle Stops Report. The "disparity index" comparing traffic stops among races showed a jump from last year, when blacks were 75 percent more likely than whites to be stopped. Until now, last year's percentage had been the highest since the reports began in 2000.

John Gaskin, spokesman for the St. Louis County chapter of the NAACP, said the numbers are shocking.

"Quite frankly, it's really deplorable," Gaskin said. "It's why we've ended up in a situation where people are talking about travel advisories and African-American groups are less likely to come and do business in our state."

Last July, the national NAACP issued a travel advisory for Missouri, citing last year's vehicle stop data and other racial concerns in the state.

Police treatment of blacks in Missouri was scrutinized after Michael Brown, a black, unarmed 18-year-old in the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson, was fatally shot by a white officer on Aug. 9, 2014. The shooting and decisions not to charge the officer who shot Brown, Darren Wilson, resulted in months of often violent protests and was a catalyst for the national Black Lives Matter movement.

The articles are dripping with sarcasm but the underlying message is on point.

One day, hopefully soon, my dream of colleges and universities across America instituting doctorate-level programs on the study of white people will become a reality. When that day comes, certain elements will be required in the course curriculum to achieve a Ph.D. in wypipology, including:
  • The autobiography of Rachel Dolezal.
  • A laboratory with unseasoned-chicken taste tests.
  • An audio recording of the Starbucks 911 call.
  • Today’s video of an Oklahoma woman who called the police on black pool-goers because they wouldn’t talk to her when she was depressed.

This latest viral video in the ongoing series of white people calling the police on black people features a white woman who is either drunk, high, suffering a bout of mental illness, or just white, making a 911 call while lounging poolside at an Oklahoma City apartment complex.

When the first video posted to Facebook begins, the woman is already on the phone with the authorities. When Poolside Patty hangs up, a woman identified as Ja’Maya Burleson asks the woman why she called the police.

“You know what?” the disgruntled white woman replies, “I nicely asked you if you would talk to me because I’m depressed.”

“I’m not a counselor. I’m not certified, baby,” the videographer responds, leaving Patty Police-caller agape in horror, apparently unfamiliar with the word “No.”

In the clip, the bummed-out Becky initially denies having called the police, then insists that the 911 operator called her because ... of course, they did. (I shouldn’t speculate. For all I know there could be a secret network that gives periodic white people wellness checks.)

Soon, the police arrive, and Patricia goes to explain herself to the law enforcement officer who is obviously taking time out of his busy black-people-shooting crime-fighting schedule to help with the terrible plague of despondent mayo-sapiens.

“Yesterday was my birthday, I was very depressed,” Patty explains to the officer. “I went over and I asked the other girl if I could talk to her, and she said, ‘No.’ She said, ‘What do you want to talk about?’ and I said, ‘I’m depressed.’”

And then, holding back tears, Pat the Crestfallen Pool Girl explains to the officer how much it hurt her to see the other black people laughing and taking pictures. Then she alleges that one of the black women threatened her (which the witnesses deny).

Sobbing, fully awash in white tears, Pat admits: “OK, I did say ‘I’ll beat your ass,’” but, she explains to the officer, “I didn’t mean it, of course.”

The officer interrupts the white woman and informs her that he has patrolled that apartment complex for three years and didn’t even know the pool existed until another man flagged him down and told him that “a short little blond lady” was at the pool causing a scene because she was “drunk or on something.” He asks the lone white woman why everyone else would gang up on her. Patty admits that she approached three different guys and asked them to talk before asking a “beautiful African-American woman with blond locs” to engage in a depression-fighting conversation.

When it was her turn, the black women tries to calmly explain the situation, but Patty interrupts with sobs, explaining how scared she was of the people who, she admits, did absolutely nothing to harm her (unless you count her frail, alabaster sense of entitlement). Finally, the cop realizes that Patty is actually “on something,” and decides to leave.

The “something” that Patty was on is called “white privilege.”

White privilege shouldn’t be confused with racism. Even the display or misuse of privilege isn’t necessarily racist. This woman seriously believes that the universe has endowed her with the right to take any black person chilling at the local watering hole and turn them into her temporary Teddy Ruxpin. The ultimate privilege is the belief that the world owes you happiness and should bend itself backward to accommodate that idea.

This ends today’s class. However, before you leave, I’m giving a short, extra-credit pop quiz.

Rank these white women who called the police from worst to just-a-little-bit-shitty:
  1. Jennifer “BBQ Becky” Shulte: For alerting authorities to the improper use of cookout technology.
  2. Sarah Braash: For calling the cops on a woman sleeping on the couch in her dormitory.
  3. Holly Hylton: For allegedly setting the record for 911 calls from a single Starbucks.
  4. The Airbnb Woman: Who called the cops because she thought three black women leaving an Airbnb were burglars.
  5. Baby Protector: The white woman who sicced Five-O on a man walking with his child because he looked “suspicious.”
  6. Hobby Lobby Laura: Who summoned the police on a man returning items because ... umm... no one knows.
  7. Unreal Estate Amber: The unidentified woman who thought a real estate investor was breaking and entering ... with keys.
  8. Maggie the Manager: The Tacoma, Wash., woman who stood outside a dressing room and loudly read the store’s theft policy before calling the cops.
  9. Photo Neighbor Lady: The unidentified woman who snapped a photo of a man walking his dogs, and submitted it to cops hunting a burglary ring.
  10. Beelzebecky: The white woman who screamed that a man had a gun because he was driving through her neighborhood.

Now take those papers and rip them up.

Class dismissed.

Talking on a cell phone, committing no crime, not resisting, and not even the one the police were called on to begin with..

Newly released footage from Arizona appears to show another example of police using undue force on an unarmed citizen.

The surveillance video opens with a Mesa police officer exiting an elevator onto an apartment complex's fourth-floor deck. A man — later identified as Robert Johnson, 33 — comes into view. He leans forward on a railing and checks his phone.

About three minutes later, four officers surround Johnson while he appears to be on his cellphone. They talk to him and he shifts his body against a wall. Then they grab him, knee him in the gut and throw several punches to his head and body until he slumps to the ground.

They place him in handcuffs. Later, an officer shoves his head into the elevator door.

The 20-minute clip released publicly Tuesday is part of an internal investigation that led the officers to be placed on administrative leave, Mesa Police Chief Ramon Batista told NBC affiliate KPNX.

While the incident occurred May 23, Batista said he only learned of it a week later.

"This in no way represents the whole work that is done everyday," Batista said. "They're human beings and certainly at first glance this looks like a mistake, it doesn't look right. And it's my job, it's our job to collectively investigate and find the answers to this."

Johnson was not being investigated at the time, but was at the complex while his friend allegedly tried to get into an ex-girlfriend's apartment, police said. Authorities were called as part of a domestic dispute.

Johnson, who did not have any weapons on him, is facing disorderly conduct charges, KPNX reported. (OAW: aka the BS cops charge you with when they have no other reason to arrest you. )

The video does not contain audio, although police claim Johnson was argumentative and refusing commands to sit down. (OAW: Clearly a lie. Even CTP wouldn't buy that BS and make excuses for these "officers". Oh who am I kidding? Of course he would! ) Another man can be seen in the video sitting against a wall.

"There is no explanation that can justify that level of force," Johnson's pastor, Andre Miller, told reporters. "When you look at the video, even after he was unconscious, he was still struck."

Johnson's attorney, Benjamin Taylor, couldn't immediately be reached for comment Wednesday. He said in a statement Tuesday that his client was cooperative and being peaceful against the wall.

"The misconduct of these officers would have gone unnoticed if it had not been captured by surveillance videos at the apartment complex where the assault occurred," Taylor said. He wants the police department to hold the officers accountable and "develop a law enforcement culture that meets community and constitutional norms."

The Mesa Police Association, which represents the officers, said in a statement that the video does not provide the full context of the encounter because there is no audio.

"It is important to understand that any use of force, when viewed, is difficult to watch and never looks 'good,'" the union added.

As a result of the incident, the Mesa Police Department has changed its use-of-force policy so that officers can only hit people in the head or face if they become physically violent, officials said. Previously, the policy could be interpreted that it was acceptable for an officer punch someone even before they turned violent.

The fired employee. Was it:
(1) the one who forgot to remove the sensor
(2) the one who accepted the return and noticed sensor present
(3) the store manager who called the cops without checking surveillance tapes

#3 is the most guilty for not doing his/her homework. #1 is guilty of a presumably honest mistake. #2 is just doing their job. So the store manager should be the one fired, but I suspect it was #1 or #2 that got canned.

Side topic, do people actually return bras? I wouldn't even consider returning underwear that did not fit.

Not saying this is what happened, but... it's possible the clerk was legit suspicious.

There are people who buy something, then go back to the store with the bag and the receipt, grab one off the rack, then "return it because someone left the tags on." Retail people look out for this. Store policy probably also frowns on confronting shoplifters directly in case it escalates.

reader: if the tags are still on, yes. Especially now that many stores don't hold all sizes in stock, so you order online and return to store what you don't like.

Or in this case, bought one, liked it, came back with the bag and receipt, grabbed one off the rack, and used that story to get the sensor taken off and to get another one.

Obviously seems unlikely to work if there are any security cameras at all, and all of 10 seconds of checking the cameras could confirm her story.

Exactly. While this is a very real tactic used by boosters the problem here is that the store manager and the police "officer" just assumed this was the case as opposed to relying upon any actual evidence that a crime had actually been committed.

If there's video the manager didn't check, then they are responsible for assuming, definitely. I was just curious that the article had no mention of video supporting either party.

Thinking about this more. Do they even need to check surveillance tapes? With the sensor tag still present, it should have rung the door alarm. After the original sale, and when she brought it back. For this mistake to happen, the door alarm must not have gone off.

Is it possible the store's door alarm was busted, no one had noticed, and they don't want to talk about it now? Admitting that would be an open invitation for shoplifters to visit that store.

So they {quietly fix the door alarm,} apologize to the customer with a store credit, and claim they fired an unspecified employee. This sounds plausible, and explains the story details that don't fit well.

I’ve returned clothes that still had the sensor on, and re-entering the store didn’t trigger an alarm. Dunno why not. Maybe the system can detect the difference between entering and leaving?

I've had the door alarm go off at Home Depot when the cashier forgot to charge up the sensor in a hardware purchase. Doing so makes it temporarily invisible to the door alarm. Each time, the cashier waved me to keep going. She knew what had happened. btw, the alarm doesn't seem to be present on the entry door, where the Returns desk is. Only on the Exit doors.

Never experienced any sensor mistakes with clothing. As those sensors are normally removed, they should always ring the door alarm.

Thorz: Either your door sensor was defective - or the store had turned the alarm off. Perhaps for too many false alarms scaring customers away. It's even possible they only run the alarm during hours when shoplifting is more likely. Like after school lets out.

Swimming While Black ...

A black family was targeted by a white man, who had the nerve to ask them if they had showered prior to attempting to enjoy a day at a California hotel pool.

Mom Carle Wheeler can be heard on cellphone video that she posted to Facebook accusing the man of targeting her and her daughter solely out of all the patrons at the pool at the Westin Hotel in Pasadena, Calif., with a rant about “diseases.”

According to Wheeler, the man continually approached her and her daughter, asking personal questions, and at one point, even pretended to be someone from the “health department.”

Wheeler wrote in her post:

This past Monday, June 11, 2018 at 10 am PST while on summer vacation at the Westin Hotel in Pasadena, California my 5 year old daughter and I were approached by a white man while swimming in the hotel pool. The man asked if me and my little girl had showered before getting into the pool because people carry diseases into the pools and he doesn’t want the health department to shut the pool down.

Minutes later he approached us again on the opposite end of the pool under the pretense that he worked for the health department.

I let him know that being black is not a disease and showering would not wash the BLACK off our skin. I think it’s awful that ANY man would think it’s okay to essentially ask a woman and a little girl if we took off our clothes and scrubbed our naked bodies before getting into a hotel swimming pool.
In the video, an employee at the hotel can be seen speaking to the man as Wheeler becomes increasingly upset.

“You had no right to do what you did,” Wheeler can be heard saying to the man.

“I simply asked them if they had showered,” the man admits with naught a sliver of self-awareness in his voice.

“Because that’s one of the rules,” he continues, “and I don’t know about you guys, but I’m tired of getting in pools people consider baths.”

“But you didn’t ask anyone else,” Wheeler points out.

The man tries to brush her assertion off, claiming that no one else was there, however, Wheeler insisted that there were “plenty of people in the goddamn pool.”

As Wheeler continues to blast the man, he does the most white-man ever, telling her to “relax.”

The hotel worker can be heard telling the man his comments were inappropriate, to which Darth Jack responded with a long-suffering, “I apologize. It’s everyone business. ... Google it! Google the diseases in pools.”

At some point, Wheeler can be heard requesting that her daughter—who was still witnessing all of this bullshit—be removed from the confrontation so that she wouldn’t have to be further subjected to the man’s ridiculousness.

However, the man is not quite done yet.

“It’s only a shower, young lady, don’t worry,” the man taunts, calling after the 5-year-old girl as she is being led away.

Eventually, a man identified as the manager of the hotel, Carl Sprayberry, shows up, and asks the man, still unidentified mind you, to leave, while he pulls Wheeler and her family aside.

That difference in treatment only proves to further upset Wheeler as she questions the manager’s decision to let the man leave without even getting his name.

Wheeler wrote in her post:

After many failed attempts at pleading with Mr. Sprayberry to not let the man go but to instead find out who he was, we left. Only after speaking with the white bystanders who corroborated our story did Mr. Sprayberry instruct the other hotel managers to review the tapes to find the man he had just let go! Upon our departure from the hotel Ms. Dolliver apologized to us and admitted that Mr. Sprayberry handled the situation incorrectly. She said they were “still reviewing the tapes” to find the man and remove him from the hotel. No follow up had been made by anyone from the Westin Hotel since.

I have to teach my innocent child that no matter how much we educate ourselves with degrees, no matter what career we choose, no matter if we own a nice home in a gated community, or drive a nice car there are still people in this world who will not like us just because of the color of our skin and even worse there are people in this world in positions of power and authority like Carl Sprayberry that will not stand up for us when they know it’s wrong that we are treated that way

Coming home to a gated community while black ...

A black doctor coming home from a late-night shift was greeted by the ugly face of racism after a white man used his SUV to block her from entering the gated community where she has lived for about eight years.

Dr. Nnenna Aguocha captured some of the encounter on camera. According to WXIA-TV, the good doctor was trying to enter the Buckhead Townhome community in Atlanta when another property owner blocked her at the gate entrance, parking his vehicle under the gate arm and refusing to move forward to let her in despite her requests, a police report shows.

“He got out of the car and threatened to call the police on me because I was trespassing,” Aguocha narrated in the recording of the incident. “This is racial profiling at its finest.”

The man had the nerve to call the police on Aguocha, who turned around and called the police on him in return. The doctor explained the situation to officers, adding that she had been accused of tailgating his car.

“This gentleman refuses to move his car because he supposedly does not think that I live here,” Aguocha could be heard saying in disbelief in the video.

“Are you serious?” she asked. “Do you know what you are doing? You are racially profiling.”

The man apparently told officers that he was trying to protect his community after the theft of some air conditioners in the area. But Aguocha isn’t buying that (and neither am I). (OAW: Because she can totally make off with a huge AC compressor by herself. )

“I absolutely think it was racially motivated,” Aguocha told the news station as she broke into tears. “When this altercation was going on, what went through my mind was this guy could do absolutely anything to me. He could shoot me dead on the spot because he was trying to protect the neighborhood and the property, and people would make up stories later.”

The real gag? The man doesn’t even live in the community himself and actually resides in Roswell, Ga., although he does own property in the area.

The president of the homeowners association in the area told the news station that they had no knowledge of the robberies—the existence of which, of course, do not excuse the man’s absurd and racist behavior.

The man eventually moved his vehicle after police arrived on the scene.

No charges were filed in the incident(OAW: Not even a "Disturbing the Peace" charge that cops ROUTINELY use to haul black people off to jail when they have nothing else they can use. ), but Aguocha told WXIA that she was considering taking legal action against the unidentified man.
