Well, my mistake, it apparently does work for some people, albeit still half-assedly (read only? come on).
I've yet to find to find an FTP site (non-anonymous) that doesn't lock up finder.app... this is a big deal.
Then again, maybe I just don't know "how to do it"

Finder FTP should be improved. And I agree, implicit in most people's idea of FTP support is the ability to connect to damn near any site, anonymous or not, and be able to write to it if your permissions allow.
Then we have absolutely no disagreement. My point is that what is on apple's jaguar feature site is approaching false-advertisement territory (FTP-Finder access was 1/150th of the reason to buy jaguar, if you follow Jobs' reasoning).
That, if nothing else, should be enough for them to fix it (and I still can't see how this is a resource-intense task).

Developer, yea there's still some issues, it's painfully slow and locks up my computer but I was making the connection point It did however pop a user/pass box but isn't set up with an UI like an app. Yea, just playing with it just locked the finder, hehe, gotta reboot.

Depends on how good the stuff is, sometimes it's puff, puff, PUFF, and then pass it before you get mugged. But that doesn't mean i can't connect to the finder

well, go on...
I also have had no problems with authenticated FTP from the Finder. I was worried when I heard it was causing problems for everyone else, but I and one other person I know personally, have used it quite a lot with no problems whatsoever.

So whatever the cause of the problems is, it is not universal.

I now use the Finder to post updates to the website at my own domain, which does require authentication.

Well, the next thing I did after the above post was to use the Finder to do some more authenticated FTP work. Wouldn't you know it, this time it DID lock up the Finder... and OmniWeb, and the Dock, and I couldn't force quit anything. I couldn't even connect reomotely (SSH) to kill things manually.

I had to do a hard restart with the power button!!!

So I agree now that FTP in the Finder is exceedingly buggy. However, I stand by my original opinion that it sometimes works fine with authentication and write access.

I sure hope they get the problems sorted out quick, because if working well and reliably, this is a very good feature for the OS.

How do you use it? I type 'ftp://login[email protected]' and it mounts fine, but has no write permissions.

I don't include the login and password in teh URL, I enter them when prompted. Ie, I use the URL:

ftp://my.site.com

Do you have write access to the top level directory of that FTP site? Most people don't, no matter how they connect. Can you get write access to a folder that you know you have the right permissions for?

Well, maybe I was dreaming... FTP is now working okay (authenticated) again, but I don't have write access.

nope, the ftp-finder feature is just half-assed and buggy, like I said a page ago

this should never have made its way into a shipping product.
it never would have made it into a Windows release ::ducks::

oooohhhh that's ballsy!

But you're probably right. The Windows bugs are usually less obvious (although often more dangerous, such as the latest one, where you've only got to click on the right kind of link on a web page, and the windows help system will erase your entire hard drive - that's the best one I've heard of yet).

Checked software update, and saw this

Thought they might be updating in the process. Alas, checked 0.003847 seconds later, and no update.

BTW FTP in the Finder IS BROKE. It doesn't work in ALL FTP servers.

I can log into my space, have it show up on my desktop, but alas, no files. Even though it's full of them

Yes and I have tried to log into it doing it many different ways. Nothing, NADA.

Dissapointing.

I wonder if Apple is trying to upload 10.2.1 to their FTP servers with 10.2 Finder

I'd say its Bauhaus: http://www.adobe.com/type/browser/P/P_087.jhtml. It's an odd name because although the designer designed it while he was at the Bauhaus, the official Bauhaus correspondence was in a typeface very different from the "universal typeface".

On Topic: I can connect to all my FTP servers and view files on them fine. I just can't make any changes!

here's my point.

Apple knows about the bug, they knew about it when they shipped jaguar. The bug is supposed to be a simple fix of a permissions issue, even if it wasn't so simple Apple has the resources to fix it for the 10.2.1 update. I guarantee they could, as there is more than enough talent at Apple to release a quick fix. It's the blatent ignoring of this issue that ticks me off. Apple deleted an entire thread at their message forums posted about the FTP bug. I paid for that feature Steve talked about on stage. When SMB was released and crashed and was buggy, it took them way to long to fix that as well. Apple has always been known for world-class software. Lately I'm getting the serious impression apple is half assed. Take iCal or many of the iApps is that really the best they could do in a 1.0 release?

It feels like windows. Windows had screwed up built in ftp with no threading for years. Apple's now following in the footsteps with having the same thing. I switched away from windows for a better experience. Now I have slower processors, and software that's slowly starting to scare me.. I just want apple to keep the quality in check.

Regardless of FTP being important or not, it was a feature listed for Jaguar 10.2 And Steve discribed it as using it in your favorites to save directly to ftp. There is not a single reason for FTP fix to be held back from 10.2.1, there is enough damn programmers at apple to fix ftp in the span of 30 minutes if their life depended on it.

If there is a ligitiment reason for it not to be fix or this feature "upgraded" then Apple should tell us. Instead of deleting forums or ignoring problems.

I just tried for the first time to connect to an FTP server from the Finder. I agree with the critics - it blows. Slow, yes, locks-up the Finder, yes. This is really the first noteworthy "complaint" I've had about Jaguar.

maybe they finally read feedback and pulled the update notes because now they have to fix FTP first :-)
