Open iTunes, search for 'Have a Camper Day'. Download and play with it. Be advised you are gonna to contract the two major smiling muscles, the risorius and the zygomatic major, a lot of times.

---

Why are weather applications so boring?

"Have a Camper Day" is how Camper, the shoe brand, understands optimism: half imagination, half craft. To communicate this concept in a friendly, different and non-intrusive manner, we decided to take a new look at some of the things that are currently set in stone. The way we view weather forecasts today (with boring, lifeless interfaces and icons) was a great starting point for us and seemed like the perfect tool for illustrating the philosophy behind the concept. As a result, we created new meteorological elements made from prêt-a-porter materials and turned them into musical instruments that react to touch.

Why is this necessary? My preferred weather app (Weather Alert USA) looks just good enough, provides a ton of weather alert customizations, and a few ways to show the weather. The focus is weather, not eye candy and BS backgrounds. This app will appeal to a few but it's a photo app that just so happens to have the weather in a small area of the bottom of the display.

It's free. Jeez.

I'm a fan of WeatherBug:

It has data. Lots and lots of data. I like data.

Full disclosure: I live mere blocks away from a well maintained WeatherBug station, so I get really accurate local data. As in the most accurate I've ever had in my life. Others may not be so lucky.

Agreed on WeatherBug - great app with lots of useful data. I use the iPhone version too.

I do as well. Even paid two crisp and clean Washingtons for it.

However, WRT the point of the thread, I very much wish it was prettier.

So am I. It's a great app but they really need to update the icon and graphics for the Retina display. They look like crap on my iPhone 4.

I decided to check out My-Cast Weather Radar after a pimping by Gruber.

It's definitely prettier than WeatherBug (which isn't saying much). It has graphs. I like visualized data too, so that's nice.

WeatherBug is creaming it in the accuracy department though. I live right near Lake Michigan, and the app is getting weather data from four or five miles inland (at the airports). Today, that meant My-Cast tried to trick me into believing it was a whole 10 degrees warmer than it really was.

I'm tellin' ya, if you live near a station, WB is killer.

I played around with My-Cast some more, and it was giving different readings for my position near the lake vs. the airports, so I withdraw my previous statement that My-Cast is cribbing temps from inland.

Still gave warmer readings than I thought it should be. I should get a thermometer and test.

Anyone know of a super-accurate thermometer? I assume analog is the way to go for the best price to accuracy ratio.

I feel as if weather is just weather.
The best feature to have for a weather app would be its ease and convenience.

Finally...good to know I'm not the only one who thinks this...I'll add it should look nice but looks are not the #1 priority. This app looks sloppy which distracts from the weather forecast.

I imagine a world where one day all free weather apps are accepted, regardless of their creed, shoelaces, or yarn.

I love this app, but it doesn't always load quickly for me.

Right now, WB says it's 54, and MyCast says it's 69.

Seeing as it's cold out, I say **** you MyCast.

Aelios has a very interesting UI. I haven't downloaded it yet, but the videos on the website are very interesting.

Purty!

In the continuing WB vs. MyCast saga, it's either 48 degrees (WB) or 62 degrees (MC).

I have to agree with the post up above. Aelios is pretty darn sexy - It's really one of the nicest looking weather apps that I have laid eyes on.

I have settled on WeatherPro for both the iPhone and iPad. Simply the best out of the 30 or so that I own.

I've been having issues with my city not showing up in WeatherAlert USA so I bought eWeather Pro which is beautiful and functional.

Yes, Aelios is classic. Simple yet stylish. As for me, I prefer weather apps that are simple and plain. The maps and some other details are a bit more complicated already, especially if viewing it on a smaller screen so I prefer plainer weather apps. Just a personal choice, though others are really cool ones!

Aelios makes Weatherbug look like a frumpy mishmash.

Aelios broke with the iOS 6 update, and they haven't managed to make it work with the new APIs yet (nor, apparently, Google's Maps SDK).

Sad.

I'm still looking for something which comes even close to Weatherbug for accuracy.

The stock Apple Yahoo weather is really starting to piss me off again. It's high by at least 10°, and 50° to 60° feels way different.

It matches the downtown WeatherBug better.

Hmm... I wonder if 1,000 cars and 30,000 people crammed into a square mile raises the ambient temperature at all.

You know how there's different regional versions of ells and pounds and things like that?

Blame the non-metric measurement units.

Seems more like a poorly placed sensor coupled with lousy coverage.

I think the Apple weather app uses the local "official" temperature, which is typically at an airport - yes, surrounded by pavement and jet exhaust... The WeatherBug app uses much more localized data sources. I can go with a Sea World location, which is close to my house, or "The Winston School" which is near my work, or probably a dozen other San Antonio weather observation sites with Weather Bug. That is almost certainly the difference you're seeing in the two apps' numbers: different observation sites which report different, local, observations.
