"Spitzer claims Gratis wrongfully shared as many as 7 million "user records," creating the largest deliberate breach of a privacy policy discovered by U.S. law enforcement. He said the company's promises to consumers included: "We will never give out, sell or lend your name or information to anyone," and "We will never lend, sell or give out for any reason your e-mail address or personal information."

For the record SillyNN here censored the sites URL in the title which was FréeiPøds.com

I am shocked, just shocked, that gambling is going on this establishment.

Who'da thunk that an Internet site promising visitors free iPods was being used to harvest e-mail addresses and other personal info for nefarious purposes. While Gratis did break their terms of service, hence breaking the law, I think anyone who actually signed up on this site is a dumb-ass who deserves a lot of spam, and maybe a little fraud, to learn that "there is no such thing as a free lunch". Maybe they won't make the same mistake again.
One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.
I would prefer my humanity sullied with the tarnish of science rather than the gloss of religion.

They promised that?

Wow. How incredibly stupid.

It was perfectly obvious that the only source of revenue for that company was sharing info for advertising purposes.

How could any user not have expected that to happen?

Still, sue the socks off those lying bastards.

"Silly", eh? We did it so that YOU wouldn't be hassled by people posting their referral links here. By putting it the censor filter, the referral URLs automatically get broken, rendering them inert.

I wish the best for an equitable resolution of the problem. It's the lawyers that win in the end.

Not that I don't think Macupdate shouldn't be blocked, I recently saw a software developer complain about their attitude.

The accused them of holding back newer versions to make more money. Idiots.

No, I was just referring to a kerfuffle we had here a while back. I'm just generally causing trouble and being snarky. Nothing to see here, go about your business!

I'm all for keeping free****.com on the censor list, it reduces the amount of spam.

Wouldn't this be almost the same thing the government could do, like the request of privite information from websites without paying of course? Google vs Gov?

They made most of their money by using "partners" who would offer trial periods or discounted products to people wanting a free ipod. In order to get your free ipod you had to sign up for a trial of some sort with xx amount of their partners. But I don't think people were stupid for doing it... if you haven't heard, many, many people did get free ipods from it. They just had to remember to cancel their trial memberships with the other companies before the trial period was up.

Don't generalize one former admin's outrageous outburst. Censoring Macupdate was childish and unprofessional, and was done without asking anyone else. That person is no longer an admin.

I briefly signed up with Vindigo.com years ago, and a couple of weeks ago got a phishing spam that used my vindigo-specific email address, ** and my name and billing address ** that was current when I used Vindigo.

Vindigo claims ignorance about how all of this got in the hands of criminals, maybe pointing to their former payment processing company, but it's pretty ugly either way.

Generalize? How would I know the backstory of this admin before you explained it above? Heck I still don't know what went on.

Well, since you probably know about the macupdate censorship at all, you probably saw it in the feedback thread, which explained what happened.

Is it fare for you to make assumptions about things I "probably saw" before you throw attitude at me?

I have ZERO idea what happened and don't go to the feedback lounge. At the very least you could have pointed to the thread.
