I have a MBP with the 23" Apple Cinema Display. Let me tell you, that 1900x1200 resolution is amazing! There is tons of room to move windows around and is very simple with plug-and-play. Just plug it into DVI, the Mac screen will go dark for a second, then come back with the background, the Display will turn on, and voila! It's wonderful :-). I wish I could afford that 30".

I would very highly recommend the 24" widescreen Dell 2407FP display. At least look at it before settling on the Apple 23" Cinema Display. The Dell 24" has better specs (in my opinion) than the Apple, has four USB ports, a 9-in-1 card reader, picture in picture and numerous input and output ports. And best of all, you should save at least $100 - $150 compared to the Apple display. Feel free to email me for pics or if you have any questions, though I'm just a happy customer (by no means a regular Dell customer) and you might find more info at Dell's site.
FWIW, I struggled with th idea of sticking a Dell product on my desk, but have absolutely no regrets at all now.

I understand what you mean about the educational discounts offered by Apple. My wife has access to the same, but I think you'd still find that the Dell comes in cheaper than the Apple's even with that educational discount. And there are certainly no problems using the Dell monitor on your MacBook pro.

You must be the richest poor college student ever.

;-)

In any case, no. You can't drive two external displays unless you can find an Expresscard video adaptor, which I don't think exists yet.

Definately go for the 30'' ACD!

If the 13'' macbook could run the 30'' this would have been the setup I would get. the 23'' is a also a great choice; I have a 20'' iMac and I feel that I could be more productive with a larger screen.
20'' iMac 2.16 C2D: 2GB
red (product) iPod nano
iPod shuffle
up next: macbook C2D

The MacBook Pro with a 23-Inch Apple display is the perfect setup.
You shouldn't have any problems running this monitor.

I use my C2D MBP with a 23" ACD and my CD MBP with a 20" ACD. Unless your performance requirements demand you get a MP, IMHO a MBP and an ACD is an absolutely awesome setup.

Have a good look at the Dell though - even considering the Educational discount. I have the Dell 2407FP - 24". I compared it to the Apple 23" and it was a fair bit better and a lot better value.
One downside is that it is a Dell and looks now where near as good next to my MBP - but at the end of the day, the display perfomacne is the most important thing.

Good luck deciding.

At the moment, the OS is slated for release in Q2 of 2007. Typically it happens around mid-end of April, so look for it then. It's promising to be a good OS with independent resolution for monitors. It will be able to drive them at higher resolutions. I know in USA, the upgrade for OS with student discount was previously $79 vs. regular $129.

iLife 07 may come out in January and could perhaps be announced with MacWorld.
