My default folder is BLANK!

My G3 beige w/OS 8.1 has lost something. The folder icon won't show up any more, it just shows blank when a new folder is made. I reinstalled system software, no luck. I can make folder just fine on a external harddrive and the servers. When is tried to copy the folder icon, it makes finder restart! I'm out of ideas, i'm sure it is just something simple.

Did you perform a normal or Clean install ? If you just performed a normal install, your problems might not be resolved easily. Try eventually to trash Finder prefs, if it is not working, just make a clean install of Mac OS.

Have you tried simply rebuilding the desktop?

I did a normal install over the top of the other OS. I have @2-4G of very important stuff that i don't want to lose.
Rebuilding the desktop and trashing Finder pref. was the first thing i tried.
Norton Utilites doesn't seem to find the problem, and disk first aid doen't either!

Have you tried Disk First Aid, Norton Utilities or Disk Warrior?

Doing a clean install of the system doesn't get rid of anything on your drive. In fact, it KEEPS stuff on your drive. It renames your existing System folder to "Previous System Folder" and then creates a new system from scratch. Then you move over third party extensions or preferences as needed. But if something goes awry, you can easily go back to your previous system.
Again, "clean install" does NOT mean "format HD". You don't lose /anything/.

OK, I phrase it wrong, I did and install of OS 8.0 then update to 8.1, (keeping the old system) but that didn't work.
