Last night, I tried to play an .mkv file* using VLC on my iPad via Airplay through an AppleTV. I could only get the audio to show up on my tv. No video. It was playing just fine on the iPad. I rummaged through all the VLC settings, but couldn't find anything relevant to the problem. I wandered over to the VideoLan forums, and it seems I'm not the only one experiencing this problem.

Any guesses why VLC only got the audio out over Airplay

* The .mkv was stored locally on the iPad. So, no networking/server voodoo was involved.

There's no reason why it shouldn't just work.

I have some some flukiness with iOS and Airplay, sometimes re-starting both the iOS device and the ATV helped.
Have you tried that ?

I wonder if it's some issue with the encoding.
Perhaps local playback is able to "recover" or work around it, but streaming is not.

Try playing some other files.

If smaller .mkv file works, it might be a wifi bandwidth issue. Not enough capacity for the video stream.
if same-size .mov file works, it's Apple being stupid about .mkv files.
If a different player app works, it's a VLC bug or setting issue.

I don't have another .mkv or a .mov of the same size to test, unfortunately. It was really just a one-off try, anyway. We streamed Amazon Prime all night last night without a hitch. I'm going to guess it's a VLC thing.
