Too bad it was just FX. That's what you call a bomb-proof roll.

The secret is that the whole whale footage is real... it's the dudes in the boats that were added digitally.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

Did you ever see the video of an orca and a great white going at it? The killer whale made pretty short work of the scariest predator in the sea. Nothing but blood and cartilage in the water when all was said and done.

There was an amazing (and true) story a few years ago where a great white shark chomped a kayak off the coast of California. Two guys were paddling along in whitewater kayaks when a large shark came up behind one of them and grabbed the kayak in his jaws. The kayak went vertical as the shark tried to pull it under, then popped into the air when the shark realized its mistake (hey, it's not a seal!) and let go.

The two terrified paddlers made straight for shore, where a park ranger accosted them and told them they weren't allowed to land. Then the paddlers showed him the row of teethmarks just behind the cockpit, and he relented.

Wow, thanks for the great story. I found the original account. I grew up kayaking a red Perception Dancer like the guy who got chomped. Shudder to think about the stern disappearing in a mouth.

Guess I'll stick to lakes & rivers for now.
V, do you mostly kayak or canoe?

I tried finding a clip of the great white/killer whale video, but I'm not having too much luck. I found a clip on cnn.com, but it only shows the aftermath, the whale and her calf finishing what's left of the shark carcass.

http://www.cnn.com/EARTH/9710/08/wha...e.shark.15.mov

I also found this magazine article that has a picture of the orca with the white shark sticking out of its mouth. If you see the whole video, the orca has the sharks head inside its mouth, thrashing it about on the surface, the same way they do with seals. The whale is blowing blood out its spout. Kind of puts into perspective who's the baddest predator in the sea.

Baddest, indeed. Ever read "Survive the Savage Sea"? A Scottish family's sailboat is rammed and sunk by a pod of orcas out in the Pacific for no apparent reason, after which the family survives several weeks adrift in their dinghy. Perhaps the whales thought the white sailboat hull was a great white shark.
