I've been quite happy with my Samsung MP-170 LCD for many months now. But today the lure of the Cinema Display cought up to me. I was in the new Apple Store at the Short Hills Mall today and walked out with the 22" model. Slapped it onto my upgraded B&W (Radeon PCI and Sonnet G4 500 MHz) with the help of Dr. Bott's DVIator, and shazam! Here's my primary unit:

Finally brought my digicam to work... On the left, G4 450 AGP. on the right, QS Dual Gig. Speakers are Alesis M1 Actives, wired to the 450 AGP thru a Delta 44 card. Just got a 4 track cassette deck so I can start digitizing/remixing all my old demos before they crumble.

Now I wish that my desktop system felt a little faster. Thought about getting another machine (not in my budget right now, seeing how jaguar performs on it or getting a cpu upgrade. My Apple Multiple Scan 20 monitor broke last week, so I decided to buy the monitor I will use on my next workstation sooner, and I hooked it up to my Power Macintosh 9500/200, with the help of a Radeon 7000 card, an Apple DVI-ADC Adapter, and a PCI USB card.

To compliment the nice desk and room you should get an Apple or Formac LCD display, and hide all of the cables. It would look much better.

Yeah I had a 17'' Apple LCD in here for one night, but it had the annoying fading problem in the upper left like the stories at Railhead so I took it back

I don't really like how the formacs look though, so I guess I'll be saving for a 22'' hehe...

Okay guys, heres the first installment.

Bought the computer at the CompUSA I work at (for Apple). I put up the demo unit yesterday, and it looks much better in person. So I pulled out the very hot plastic, and brought it home.

First: The box:
The box on the outside is radically different. The box has a Quicksilver theme to it, and Apple has really changed their main font...not sure what this new one is yet, I'll find out. I like the look of the new box better. Anywho, the packaging inside is almost exactly the same. Opened up the flap with a picture of a Pro mouse and was greeted by the usual keyboard, mouse and documentation.

I lifted up the keyboard, and found something that shocked me. There was a DVI-VGA Adapter. I had absolutely NO idea that the low-end Mac came with an ADC port & a DVI port. Very Cool (At first, I thought I might have grabbed the wrong box, the dual gig was sitting right next to it.) Also, a nice little touch was the inclusion of a small clear plastic speaker grille, to stop people from poking the speaker with their little fingers.

In the little CD pouch bearing a Quicksilver Apple logo, there was quite a proliferation of CDs. I opened it and smiled. There it was...Mac OS 10.2. One install disk, one disk with all the various applications. I was happy.

After setting up the tower in my desk with all the necessary cords and such (See pictures below) I hit the power button. To my great surprise (yes, it turned on) it was pretty quiet. My old 933 sounded much louder than this. As opposed to a vacuum, this dualie gave off a nice sounding "Hummmmmm." After about 5 minutes, I had to check to see if it was still on, much quieter than I've been used to.

After going through the registration, I was greeted by the familiar Jaguar wallpaper. Yes, OS 10.2 came preinstalled on this baby. I set up my Earthlink dial up in about 20 seconds, and I was online, and testing out the new i App, iChat, here are my thoughts:

This Application is quite unstable. After starting it up, it crashed in about 5 minutes, and many times after that. I tried sending people files, but apparently there were some problems, and again, it crashed. It looks very nice, and I love the customability, but it does have a few bugs, so I'll stick with AIM for the time being.

Next: Jaguar - OS 10.2
This is what an Operating System should be. This upgrade has so many features built into it that I've been wanting from the very start. Spring-Loaded folders work the way they should, iDisk is EXTREMELY fast and responsive, and the new clear dock is a nice touch too.
The Finder looks and feels much better. I hated using Sherlock to find my files, the integrated search is great. I've also noticed how all the buttons, widgets and so forth have a much more "Glassy" feel. They're sharper, and I like them more than the previous ones, easier to read and distinguish.

Okay, whats next?:
This dual processor is fast. I'm using the stock 256 MB and I haven't had one pageout (spinning beach ball, which also looks better) and the only application that has crashed on me has been iChat. I got to installing my programs on it, and boy, this version is much more adept at copying files from CDs/DVDs. Copying files has got to be at least 100% faster.
Mail.app has also been vastly improved. Before 10.2, I used entourage for all my e-mail needs, the new version changed this. The Junk mail filter actually works, and it works well. Highlighting items in brown that are junk, and it found all of my junk mail no problem, but did think my
ebay invoice was junk, luckily all I had to do was tell it "Not Junk Mail."

As of this moment, Apple hit a home run. Even the "low end" Mac feels like a speed demon, the mirrored drive doors look really cool in person, and you really have to see it in person to get the real Apple feel to it, the pictures on their website don't do it justice.

Random Comments on Jaguar & Tower:
- Quartz Extreme works very well, window resizing is flawless.
- You can now choose how to smooth fonts, if your on an LCD, CRT, etc it will automatically optimize the font smoothing based on the display you're running.
-The "Dock badges" are nifty, a little icon of the application appears in the lower right hand corner of the document in the dock, so you can see which applications are using which window at a quick glance.
-The System Preferences pane has been updated, allows for better customization (like CDs & DVDs.)
-The Tower pushes out a lot of heat. The grille on the back of the Mac is absolutely necessary. It won't burn your hand, but it is rather warm.

I will post some benchmarks when I get a chance, and now what you've all been waiting for...pictures! If you guys have any questions, I'll be more than happy to address them.

I know the question has been asked here b4, but I went to the Apple Store in Tysons and looked at the machine...I still have no idea. I didn't see any ports or plugs, they just look like recessed silver circles.

Thanks JayTi! I'll be getting a dual 867 soon and I'm glad to hear that it's not too loud. Which graphics card did you get in it? I'm assuming the GeForce4MX since you got it out of a box in the store. Does anyone have any opinions on this card compared to the Radeon 9000?

24 hours later, I'm still loving this machine The 4 holes in the front are for (apparently) disappating heat. So, air vents they are I suppose. I've figured out what the new fan sounds like....it sounds like a powerbook fan, just a tad louder. My HP laptop makes more noise in this guy Also, the Hard Drive was an IBM Deskstar with the liquid bearing and such. I got the GeForce 4 MX card, and I've been pleased so far. The Radeon 9000 will be better....I'm just not doing anything that would warrant an upgrade.

yeah i got it at officemax here in cincinnati. the quality is decent for the price. i have a few problems with the glass aligning correctly on one part of the desk, but its nothing major. i think i could probably adjust it out if i wanted to mess with it.

great price, and it seems very solid. the glass is only 3/8" tempered so i was a bit weary of how much weight it can hold but so far so good. the support tubing under the glass really gives it strength. plus the people at the manufacturer seem cool, i emailed asking about getting another keyboard drawer for the other side of the desk and they said no problem. 20bux plus shipping for the 2nd drawer and all the hardware needed.
