My TiBook tumbled backwards off a table onto a stone floor. The screen was open and the machine was on.

The right hinge broke right off.

Miraculously - everything else seems to work. Although I haven't had the courage to try the DVD yet.

Letters of condolance can be posted here...

You can order the hinge from Apple. I don't think it is that much.

I will share the story of my old Ti 400MHz, perhaps it will make you feel a little better.

The Ti 400 was the coolest computer I have ever owned. The day I got it, I took it up to the kitchen table where I decided I would finish work for the day and eat my baked potato. As I carried my potato to the table, the fork (an expensive and HEAVY Ralph Lauren fork) slid off the plate and tumbled onto my TiBook keyboard where it broke the "J" key off and then took a small chuck out of the LCD. This Powerbook was just a couple hours old. I was crushed...

Then a couple months later, I left my TiBook unattended to use the restroom. When I returned I found my 32oz. cup of water on its side and my TiBook screen was black and the fan and/or HD was making a loud whining noise. Half the cup of water went into the TiBook via the keyboard. Turns out there was about $1400 worth of damage, so I took the insurance claims and replaced the TiBook.

Sure, I'm an idiot and all - I admit that. However, I learned from these terrible accidents. I am much more careful about what I do with my new TiBook 667 DVI.

Sounds like your TiBook just needs some minor surgery. Consider yourself lucky!

post a picture of the damage, and which Ti model it is-

pbparts.com can either replace the hinge, or the screen if the part that broke is formed in the screen frame-

And there is another solution where an Icelandic owner repaired the broken hinge by using aluminum and epoxy to form a new one.

The engineering students at my alma had a contest every year, who could building something around an egg that allowed it to survive being tossed from the 4th floor window of the engineering quad. Always very interesting. Some of those grads should be able to help build a more durable book. My own fell a mere 3 feet to a carpeted floor and it wiped out the trackpad of all components...........

People, be careful! I would be devastated if I did something like that to an expensive machine. The closest I got to destroying my Pismo was spilling a can of Pepsi and nearly getting it all over my machine-- I saved it just in time. I can't afford to replace it as a student so if it dies I'm stuck for a machine for a while.

I think computers and food & drink (especially coffee) don't mix too well though. The person I felt sorry for was a friend's father a few years back. He's just bought brand new top of the line Yosemite G3's for his work office (I think about half a dozen). The building's fire alarm was faulty and went off. The brand new systems were totally ruined by the sprinkler system.

Anyways, I hope all the repairs go alright! Look after that PowerBook REALLY carefully when it comes back.

Thank you all so much.

I really need this kind of support to make it through this difficult time. I hope I can do the same for you should (god forbid) something similar happen to one of you.

You don't know how much it means.. *sniff*

I'll post a photo for those of you who think they can take it. And thanks for the tip on pbparts.com. I'll be paying then a visit on payday.

Before I had an airport network. I was sitting on my sofa once with my pismo. I had been surfing (connected via moded) for a while then wrote a letter, and I wanted to print the letter. So I unplugged the power cord from the back of the machine and carried it open resting on my palms over toward the printer. The modem cord tightened up and yanked the pismo screen open out of my hands. It landed exactly on the corner of the sceen and shattered the LCD. The rest of the book worked perfectly.

This type of repair is expensive, I sent mine to www.powerbookguy.com and the repair brought the machine back to pristine condition. Good luck and be happy that it wasn't as bad as mine...

Why did you not insure it? There are insurance companies that
insure against this sort of thing.

Almost the exact same thing happened to a friend of mine. His 2 year old son knocked it off the coffee table. Apple wouldn't cover it under warrenty (of course) and it cost him 800 bucks to have it fixed. Ouch!

The best I can suggest is to check with you renters or home owners insurance. You'll be out the deductible, but that's better than paying for it yourself.

It is insured.

The problem is that it isn't broken enough to get a new one and if I send it away to be fixed we'll be parted for weeks.

Of course we could have another "accident". But then that would be murder (or maybe just fraud). But very scary either way. Although the thought of a new hi-rez screen makes me salivate.

What am I saying. NO. I couldn't... bad boy, bad boy..

The closest I got to having my Wallstreet 233 destroyed was when I took it to one of my brother's soccer practices. I am so bored at those but my mom made me take my brother, so I brought my laptop. A soccer ball came flying straight toward the upper right part of the open screen (from behind), and I put my hand up just in time to deflect it. Come to think of it, it may have only damaged the hinge, not destroyed the computer or screen, but I'm always very careful and I never leave it open and unattended for even a second when it's not on my desk (it helps that it's always on my desk).

I dropped my iPod a few days ago, about three feet onto a linoleum floor. I was very sacared it did damage, but all it did was temporarily make the center button not move down at all when it was pressed (it still registered when I pressed it, and now it's back to normal).

"That's Mama Luigi to you, Mario!" *wheeze*

I'm sorry to hear what happened. I've had a few just-in-time situations. Now I'm extra careful.

A good friend of mine had his Pismo in his backpack, and while walking in the street, it unzipped and the Pismo went for a walk on his own. The damage was not to bad, just the cd-rom was gone.

I have a Lombard that i bought new in 1998. Until two weeks ago it was my main machine. Boy i put that thing through hell and back. The latest spill was great. I was at home, and i was walking downstairs with it to plug it up to the TV to watch a DVD, and i stepped on the dragging powercord which i did not realize was dragging...the damn thing tumbled down one flight of stairs, when it landed, the battery and DVD module popped out and i swear i broke everything on the inside. As it turns out, no cracks, just scuffs on the body, and the only thing that broke was the battery! oh and the screen is a bit looser now. I'm so clumsy i'm surprised that it has lasted this long. Now that i have a PowerMac, guess i can't really expect it to be tumbling anywhere for the time being... :-)

Don't you dare encourage insurance fraud. People who commit insurance fraud raise the rates for everyone else, and it's illegal.
