I'm interested in making a text format of my playlist in iTunes so that I can send it to friends who want to know what I have. How would I do so?

Select all your tunes and choose File->Export Songlist

You can then drop the txt into excel, format it (get rid of unnecessary columns), and export as HTML if you like.
