I swear it was working in the afternoon. Only just now, it just stopped working. The sound is only half as loud now even with everything maxed out.
When i push in the earphones fully, only the left side can be heard too. So its not just the speakers, even the jack has the same problem.
Any idea what the cause is or anyway to deal with it?
Does the apple warranty cover this issue?

Check the Sounds Preference Panel > Output.
Make sure the balance is centered. That might seem obvious, but my balance has been known to shift spontaneously for no reason.

Hello,
I had a problem with my right speaker, too! It would cut in and out. I did find, however, that if I adjusted the balance all the way to the right and played music with a lot of bass, it would probably get the speaker working properly. Eventually, I took the book in and got it fixed. It was a quick repair.
Of course, when I got my iBook back, it started turning itself on and off. So, I had to take it back in and they replaced the logic board. I wonder if it was a coincidence?
