I recently acquired a 512MB DIMM of PC-100 RAM and put it in a Yikes! G4. I got it to boot up once, then afterwards it would turn on but not boot.

Before: 256+128+128+128
After: 256+512+128+128

(where the first (256) is the innermost slot, furthest from the top edge of the case door)

In the "After" configuration, the OS only reported half (256) of that DIMM. I tried it in other slots, with and without some modules, but it would only turn on, not boot.

The DIMM has Samsung chips, k4s560832d-tc75. Google seems to think of this as registered RAM, yet this DIMM (I'm told) was running fine in an iMac 500MHz for several months.

Am I out of luck?

It does appear the memory supporst ECC/Registered, but it should work fine without using it. I'd guess that your Yikes G4 doesn't support the higher density chips on that 512MB stick. You need one with a 64Meg x 64 configuration.

Correct.

The Yikes! (AKA; B&W II) does not support high-density RAM so the largest DIMMs you can use a 256MBs.

And if it was running in an iMac, it isn't ECC, which no SDRAM Mac supported.

Crucial will sell you (and guarantee compatability with) low density 512MB PC133 DIMMs (for $95 a pop).

I looked up the part number that the OP mentioned, and it appears to be used exclusively in ECC DIMMs. Perhaps he can count the number of chips on a side (8 or 9) to give us a better idea.

8 per side. I looked this model up on Crucial and they say 1536MB total max RAM, however Kingston and Corsair, as well as lowendmac.com, all say 1GB via 4x256s. I think I'll just trade this DIMM for a pair of 256s.

For the record, this Mac wouldn't even boot with PC-133 in, at least not for me.

I have never seen any 512MB DIMM work in a B&W or Yikes!, regardless of density.

We have a Yikes ato home, it takes no bigger than 256 modules, anything bigger we stick in there it only reads 256mb.
I have a PC133 module in there, and it boots just fine, it just reads half of the 512mb.

Anyone know if this G4 will accept PC-100 ECC RAM? I have an offer to trade but I don't know if the board will cope with it. I also don't know whether the RAM is registered, or it the board will cope with that.

As I said, no desktops Macs of that era will take ECC RAM.
