Canada could have been great. It could have had the technology of the US, the cuisine of the French, and the culture of the British. Instead, it ended up with the technology of the French, the cuisine of the British, and the culture of the US.

(old joke)

Living near Detroit, we notice how Canadians keep their country cleaner and are nicer, in general.

I think the TV show Due South has a lot to answer for when it comes to the popular british perspective of Canada. Also South Park.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

And one of the biggest reasons why we rate higher is simply because we have the highest number of aboriginal people per capita compared with any other city.

That and the entire native population tends to be centred just north of downtown. So yes if you walk in a small portion of the upper middle part of the city that plainly looks unsafe and ghetto like when you're there, there's a good chance that you could be the victim of a violent crime. If you go pretty well anywhere else you're fine.
Most of Canada's murder rate is related to people that know people and family and friends disputes. If you look at the rate based on random people in robberies its next to nothing.

So the better term would be "domestic homicide"?

Um, okay, that's completely different.

It is when it comes to personal safety. The odds of ever being murdered here for being at the wrong place, wrong time is a lot lower. Most murders are family members, people who know each other and criminals killing criminals. Occasionally a innocent by stander is killed, either the wrong target or a stray bullet. But is very very rare for some one to be murdered in a robbery or random act of violence.

No, I'm not sure how Salty's post fits in. I didn't see any mention of Winnipeg before. But it is in Canada and is the gateway to western Canada.

It's great they got their hockey team back, though. Go Jets!

Winnipeg's not too bad of a city. I got my University degree there at the U of M. And like Salty said, it's as safe a city as any. I used to walk and bike around at night. It has some nice festivals.

They do have lots of mosquitos, though. So much, that they usually spray for them at night during the summer.

We're planning to invade Florida! Wait,... we already did that. Ummm... we'll invade Cuba.
