Both machines take 5 volt 168-pin DIMMs. 168-pin is the same physical size as current SDRAM, PC100, PC133, etc. Those chips are older than these more available ones, so make sure it's the older kind. The 5400's can handle up to a 32MB chip in each slot, plus 8Mb soldered on the logic board, for a total of 72MB. The 5500 had no soldered RAM, but can take 2 64MB chips for a total of 128MB.
