The title pretty much says it all.
I long for the days when WD Caviar Blacks were $65. The smallest not-old-stock ones you can get are 1TB, and they are running about $140 these days.
I'm actually putting off upgrading my server because a new server needs three new hard drives, and at today's prices, it runs the total cost of the server upgrade up too high. Will prices every go back down, or are these prices sticking around for a while to come?

It's amazing how a flood in Thailand can screw up prices for months and months.

Yeah. And here I thought all of the factories were in China.

Thailand and Philippines are the new China. Cheaper (and dumber) labor.

It was supposed to return to normal by this summer. But the manufacturers are profiting nicely from the higher prices, so I'm not seeing the motivation. I wouldn't be surprised if they "somehow" couldn't catch up with demand until the end of the year.

Meanwhile RAM prices fell through the floor over this last year. HD prices are annoying, but it could be a lot worse given underlying inflationary trends.

The other problem with HD prices is that SSD vendors have far less incentive to lower prices.

At least now you can get HDDs at inflated prices. It was grim a few months ago when you couldn't get them shipped.
Speaking of RAM, 16G is now $400. I'll take 384G thanks!

New RAM is cheap. Sadly, RAM for the Xserve1,1 I want to upgrade too is still expensive.

Xserve1,1 isn't worth the power it burns... replace with an Atom and the payback time on your electric bill is a couple months?

My data center doesn't charge many any more or less, regardless of how much power it uses. Also Xserve1,1 is a first gen intel xserve, it's not a G4 Xserve. I think identifies for PPC Xserves were powermac#,#

Now there are only two HDD manufacturers, it miust be easier to fix the prices.
I heard there was an issue with one of the RAM manufacturers too so watch out for RAM prices going up imminently.

I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....
