I swear near the end of the new Verison commericals airing there is a guy sitting on a park bench using what appears to be a graphite powerbook. Is it just the lighting or me?

That's a "silverized" PowerBook.
I forget the link, but what they do is take some type of adhesive material (silver is the best looking color) and cut it to the shape and then stick it on.

Haven't seen the ad. However, GTE is part of verizon (it was part of what formed it, too). Was there a clear apple logo? If so, what color? Checking verizons site...

There was not a visible Apple logo but it was obviously a PowerBook. The same curves on the top of the screen (Outside).
