I'm gonna stop by Home Depot tomorrow or next and pick up a slab interior door to use as a desk for my computer and peripherals and such. I haven't figured out what I'm going to do for legs but I'll figure that once I get the top I'll be extra-motivated to leg it up.

JELD-WEN 32 In. x 80 In. x 1-3/4 In. Flush Solid Core Hardwood Slab Int Door

(I'm gonna have 'em cut it down to about 60" length)

just thought I'd share. who's got one? lemme see.

speaking of I went there earlier and their once large leg assortment seems to have dwindled to a few weird table bases unless I was missing something.

It's not exactly a door, but I got myself a 73" x 24" x 1" piece of nicely veneered hardboard from the DIY store. Along with set of four sturdy chrome legs, I paid around $40 in total.

I like it. Since I have a lot of heavy stuff on it, I had to prop a small filing cabinet and a sheaf of printer paper underneath the centre so the top wouldn't buckle, but other than that, I think it's a nice, excellent value desk.

You could use sawhorses for legs. Would sorta complete the look...

Are you sure that it wouldn't just be easier to go get a $120 desk from Office Depot? My boyfriend's got one - metal and particle board - and it's lasted for several years now.

Either that or get an IKEA desk. The Fredrik (replacement for the Jerker) is really quite nice - I have one and love it.

I already have a desk, it's solid and sturdy. I want more room. And I think a door with a set of legs will be perfect for what I'm looking for. The Fredrik is nice looking as well.

my current office depot thing:

they did this on one of the trading spaces type shows, they used file cabinets for the legs (and storage).

A small filing cabinet will work fine for now, but you should get yourself some angle brackets and a beam for real reinforcement. ehhhhhhhhhh....too much work i guess.

You could buy a second door and cut that to length to make legs.

You should get 2 doors. Use one as the table top. The 2nd one can be place parallel to the top, about 8" or so beneath it. It would create a nice shelf type area to store stuff in, and it would look a bit more interesting, IMO. Just cut out some holes in the 2nd level door and pass the legs through to the top level door.

Just an idea.

Every architecture office I've worked in uses doors for work surfaces.

IKEA used to have affordabel sawhorse type legs, otherwise any furniture store which sells unfinished tables will also have legs for sale. I didn't check the link you provided, but a protective stain would probably not be a bad idea as well.

I've been pushing this to people since 'Nam. The best desks are flat spaces to pile crap on. The one I was stuck with when I started work here is L-shaped. Wastes an unbelievable amount of workspace since you pretty much have to put your computer/monitor/drives in the corner of the L (vertical file drawers are on the ends so you cant get a chair under it except in the middle).

Give me a door any day. And the two doors 8 inches apart is a great concept, everybody sells desks like that for hundreds if not thousands.

I used a door for years until I got my own place and then made my own desk out of 3/4" ply that stretches the whole length of one wall. I'll spare you guys from the mess that now lives on it and post the shots from when I was building it.

How about some small file cabinets to hold up that door?

And, in college. Sawhorses are the way to go. If you've got the room for it, this really rocks. Oh yeah, and filing cabinets (2 drawer cheapies).

They may not be able to cut it down to 60" -- solid interior doesn't mean wood. Usually there's about 6-10" of wood on each end, for adjustment purposes, but the rest is filled with fireproof foam. So if it has to be 60", you may end up with something else.

For sure, thinkin about it. I only asked "what?" to Y3a because using filing cabinets was suggested earlier in the thread and then Y3a posted it all "idea-of-the-year" style.

They used doors as desks for all of our thesis studios in college. We had sawhorse legs. But I think that's a bit industrial for your place. But you could paint the sawhorses silver or maybe get something "stylish", like these...

steal some cinder blocks from a construction site. it'll even help with the 8" shelf plan.

steer clear of hollow core doors- there's just not enough to them for this purpose.

the company I work for uses industrial strength picnic tables. it looks pretty gay to have our multi-million dollar building full of picnic tables, but they work just fine.
