I've been thinking that I would shell out for a core 2 duo, but my college bookstore is advertising these prices for a one-day pre-macworld sale on the core duos. I'm tempted to jump the gun, but I was curious whether anybody had any observations. I'd mostly be using this for the web, e-mail, and word, but was reading about the all-around better performance of the core 2s and thus am reluctant:

Is that $700 for a 2.0 Macbook and $1300 for a 17" Macbook Pro?

Is there a way I can get hold of these?

That's what it is. They open the doors at 8 a.m. on Friday. ... have to have a University of Missouri ID or a something that will pass as one.

The University of Arizona has never sold anything that cheap... dang!

Oh, and for the OP: Holy hell, buy a white MacBook! $700 is just too crazy to pass up. And honestly, there isn't enough of a difference between the CD and C2D to warrant a $500 price difference (assuming the C2D is selling for the normal education price).

Any ramblings are entirely my own, and do not represent those of my employers, coworkers, friends, or species

There are a lot of people who act like when Apple announces a new product, the replaced product is somehow no longer usable. How they get this idea is beyond me, but it is there. I'm typing on a MBP that's about three weeks shy of being the "last" Core Duo MBP, and I can attest to the fact that it's still a kick-@ss machine! The fact that new MBPs are Core 2 Duo machines does NOT hurt mine at all.

So TAKE ADVANTAGE!!!! If the store wants to move out their current stock, HELP THEM OUT! I certainly would!

I don't want a 17" screen but at those prices I wouldn't think twice.

Oh, well, just my luck anyway. The boss scheduled a meeting on me at 7:30 a.m. Friday, and I didn't get out until after 8:30. I gave them a call and was told I was waaay too late. Apparently there was a bit of a line to get in the door. All gone in 20 minutes or so; something like 60 white MacBooks, 20 black ones, and 10 17-inchers.

A co-worker of mine grabbed a 17-inch MacBook. He's promised to let me look at it if I'm properly respectful. But that's as close as I got.

Well, it's not quite as good as the sale you mentioned, but you can get those systems from Apple refurbished pretty cheap. Core Duo MacBook starting at $799.00.

I really want to pull the trigger on this one, but since this is more of a want than need, I am making myself wait at least until Leopard comes out. I am hoping I can convince myself to wait until August and do the free iPod promo, but I somehow doubt I am that patient.
