Sorry but 0.4 isn't out until it shows up on http://chimera.mozdev.org/

From that page:

No, it say 0.4, but it isn't "0.4 release" yet. They change it to 0.4 before release, but they are still working on 0.4. That is exactly what was said above, except they were talking about the 0.3 release.

but it's obviously not 0.3 just renamed 0.4. whether you want to call it a 0.4 beta or 0.4 release or even "the latest 0.4 nightly build," i think we can all agree that 0.4 is actually out.

This same thing happened with .3.
It should be within a week that it is officially unveiled.

Does anyone have the 0.4 build on an http server?

I'm at work and for some reason our firewall blocks ftp connection to mozdev.org

I wonder how the official 0.4 release will cope with Jaguar. I loved chimera on 10.1.5 but on Jag it's the most buggy program on my Mac. Random crashes on average at least once every 5 minutes.

Please don't give me a lecture about beta software on beta OS's, I know this, but Chimera is the only program to crash on me on Jag.

Chimera 0.4 is not out. They did this with 0.3, as well. They are just preparing it probably so they don't forget to call it 0.4 when its released.

For whats new over 0.3... well, scrolling is MUCH faster, prefs improved, when you click on a download it now asks where to save and then downloads in a almost fully-functional download window (shows time left, progress bar, speed, etc.) and I'm sure a few other things.

Wow, I'm typing this from the latest nightly build, and I must say it's a lot better. Typing in text fields still isn't acceptable, but it acts a lot more like Mozilla. Now command-W closes a tab, and command-shift-W closes the window, like it should, instead of the silly command-Y for closing a tab. There are more preferences now, including command-click opening a new tab, and opening new tabs in the background. Yay

The bookmarks drawer still has to be manually opened at every new launch of Chimera: the browser doesn't remember if it was open or closed; Mail, OTOH - which should become Navigator's most closely related complementary app, - *does* remember the drawer's "state" (a much better implementation, IMO).

Must we go through this every time the Mozilla or Chimera teams prepare to release something?

0.4 is not out. The version number on nightly builds means absolutely nothing. It will not be out until it's up on their Website as Chimera 0.4.

However, the fact that they have changed the version numbers in the nightlies means that they feel they're getting close to being ready for a 0.4 release. Perhaps in the next two weeks sometime? Perhaps coinciding with MacWorld, even?

I keep telling the developers that they should tag their nightlies with
"THIS IS NOT FINAL" or something, precisely because we always have someone jumping the gun every single time the developers twitch. Not just on the Forums, either; MacsOnly is famous for doing this, though they haven't done it yet this time. But it's a problem that really needs fixing.

Since the drawer state is specific to each window persisting the state across launches becomes very convoluted. Even remembering the state of the last window doesn't really work since if you have several windows open and quit you're sorta playing roulette on which one will be the last to close. It was decided that having the drawer be closed at launch was much more consistent and less confusing that sometimes having it open and sometimes not.

do you guys go through this EVERY time there is a new release of mozilla, chimera, OW, or pretty much any piece of software that has nightly and then "official" builds? Obviously, the splash screen will be updated to version .4 before .4 is officially released. It only means they are getting closer to a .4 release, so all subsequent nightlies will carry the .4 number up until the actual release.

These test builds pre-0.4 are really good.

Still the odd "unexpected quit", but while it works, it works fast, clean and beautiful.

Personally, I think it's better to "show everything" at the first launch, especially for new users...)

In any case, I think Navigator and Mail should have the most coherent possible behaviors between them, as most "newbie" users (essentially web browsing and emailing) will certainly heavily use them *together* (one complements the other, as Navigator will, of course, not be a complete Mozilla suite)...

BTW, it looks like the former Chimera/Navigator main developer (Dave Hyatt) has quitted Netscape and become an Apple employee (at least if these weblogs are true...) - *very* interesting (iWeb, etc.?):
