I'm in the process of buying a Late 2006 1.83GHz 17" iMac (iMac 5,2) for my wife to use.

http://www.apple-history.com/?page=g...l=imac_late_06

Posting here to inquire about known issues, stuff like that. I'm aware of an EFI Firmware Update, and know I will have to install it.

Anything else? Are these particular devices proving reliable?

Many thanks in advance!

My hard drive died. Luckily I had AppleCare, because the drive is not user-replaceable.

Are you getting a very good deal? Cuz the quads are rumoured to land this quarter. Even if they don't, most likely a refresh is coming very soon. I'm not suggesting you should get one of those brand new machines (dual or quad), but I do wonder what the pricing of the older used dual-core machines will be when the refresh comes.

Thanks for this! I was wondering about drive replacement and like that.

It's the most propitious deal I've found so far, and I've been looking for a while: we need the 17" monitor to fit our room, and don't need a fast processor. It's a bit of a disappointment to learn that Bluetooth was not enabled on these machines, but it's not a dealbreaker. I'm paying $500.00; not a great deal, but one I can live with.

Per the apple-history site: "The 1.83 GHz model used the Intel Intel GMA950 graphics chipset, had a 24x/24x/16x/8x CD-RW/DVD-ROM "Combo" drive, and did not include Bluetooth." Maybe it does! We'll see soon.

The iMac I'm buying will be used to run Mail, Quicken, Skype and Camino. That's it. I'm guessing that, running 10.4.11, it will be able to limp along on the 512mb RAM it comes with. Any reason I would have to spend money on extra ram off the bat?

I know early-late 2006 iMacs are prone to logic board failure - well the graphics card, but that's the whole kit-and-kaboodle.

Happened to mine, as well as quite a few others at Apples forums and across the net.

Seems this all may be moot: my wife announced that a friend has given her an old PC. Sheesh. I get to maintain it, of course.

Thanks to all for your help.

Would love to see further info on these iMacs here, though. Someday....
