Just curious as too how many songs you guys have and how much you have spent. So maybe list the nuumber of songs, a rough estimate of the amount spent and how long you've had your iPod.

I have 135 songs. 5 full albums. I have probably spent about $80 bucks as a lot of them were from the first Pepsi give-away.

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

I have about 20 or so ... every one from last year's Pepsi Cap promotion. I plan to get some more this year in the same manner.

[edit] I have to say, the entire process is very fun ... and works smooth as silk. I can understand why some people might buy a song or two this way. Not for me though.

ZERO!

I rather download them for free as it isn't quite illegal in Canada to do so.

Boo hoo, I mean how many years did people tape them off the radio and make mix tapes. Not to mention copying them off friends. Now suddenly it is a sin.

Not to mention artists make squat from record sales, they make the real money from concerts and t-shirt sales and such.

I have mixed feelings about the free downloading thing. I think SWG is essentially correct .. from what I understand, artists get jack-sh!t from album sales. Corporate recording industry fat-cats get most of that revenue.

I'll admit to having some pirated music in my collection. But ... with zero exception ... it comes from one of two sources:
1) Stuff I can't buy anywhere at any price. For example, I have a bunch of rare live performances by Jeff Buckley that simply aren't available for purchase.
2) Stuff that I have bought at some point but the CD is hosed or its on vinyl and I'd like a more pristine copy that can be had by manually recording vinyl.

The only things I've downloaded that aren't in these two groups has been stuff I trashed immediately OR went out and bought the album.

273 including 200 from last years pepsi giveaway and the free song of the week every week (which more often than not aren't very good).I do have some stuff from the old napster days, but I lost a lot of that when I did a clean install on an old iMac and forgot to back them up first. Luckily, most of my music was stuff I owned on CD, so it was just a matter of re-ripping them.

Honestly, I would be better off buying my music through iTMS. Even the cd's in my car changer are copies (and I don't even listen to those much since I got satellite radio) because if my cd's are anywhere but in the rack in jewel boxes, they tend to get treated poorly.I guess the only reason I buy cd's is because I rip them at a higher bit rate than 128.

WOW! YOWZA! Apple should give you many complementary iPods.

2 out of my 11883 songs are from the iTMS. 1 to try it out and 1 free song. Rest of my music are CD rips (about 75%) or downloads.

241 out of 8733 songs. (Let's figure, for the sake of argument, since this is the lounge, that out of the rest, 7000+ are legally ripped from CD, and 1000-1500 were obtained by "other" means*) I figure maybe 10 of those are free, and at least half my purchases were full albums, so let's figure I've spent ~$180.00 on ITMS.

That would have been a WHOLE YEAR of Napster subscription service. Boy, am I stupid.

*Other means would also include borrowing CDs from friends, borrowing iPods from friends (gotta love that PodWorks) legal free downloads from band sites and mp3.com, trading with folks over iChat, and maybe 100 or so from Aquisition. A goodly portion of my aquisition grabs were songs no longer available for purchase by any other means-- I.E. out of print, or bootleg. Edit: Oh, and 30 or so I made myself.

133, though a lot of those are audible.com freebies (like the DNC, 9-11 commission, etc) that I downloaded in case I ever actually wanted to listen to them. Got a whole bunch from last year's Pepsi promotion, too. I haven't actually bought much music (less than $50, in all likelihood).

During the Pepsi promotion, I'd scope out the longest-duration classical music piece I could find for 99, to try to maximize my free "song" ("song" is often a misnomer when referring to Classical music). Exposed myself to a lot of composers that I otherwise probably wouldn't have listened to.

133 songs, 2.7 days, 1.18 GB.

202 iTMS songs (6 full albums) out of 2332 songs (ripped from my CDs). None from the Pepsi giveaway since I only drink Diet Pepsi.

Oh, and 7 songs from my band's album on iTunes.

1674 songs. 91 purchased songs. Would buy more when radiohead becomes available and Tracy Chapman, and a few others. ITMS still has the best available selection. I would probrally double purchased songs by the end of the year. IMHO subscription services suck. When I buy a song I want to keep it and not rent it, and If I feel like it, I'd burn it to CD.
At least at the Asylum, they treat me with respect.

108, the majority were free due to Pepsi promotion 2004 and weekly free songs.

I'm still on iTunes 3.0.1, as later versions don't seem to do MP3 as well (there seems to be something missing in the high-end detail on playback) and I can't be bothered to re-rip everything in AAC.

So, zero iTMS songs.
