I recently exported a set of photos from iPhoto as JPGs, burned them to a CD (using the Finder, not iPhoto) and sent the CD to my dad. He copied the JPGs onto his Windows machine and tried to edit the files, but when he tried to save them he got a message that the file was read-only and uneditable. Only after making a copy of a copy was he able to edit the photos.

In investigating this, I took a look at the original exported JPGs on my PowerBook's desktop. I did a Get Info, and looked at permissions:

Owner: Read & Write
Group: Read Only
Others: Read Only

What can I do differently to make the JPG files editable by others (besides changing the permissions manually on each file after the export)? Do Mac permissions matter even when a JPG is viewed on a Windows machine? Is there some kind of export setting I can set within iPhoto?

I'm using a 12-inch PowerBook with combo drive running OS 10.3.3 and iPhoto 2.0.

honestly. it sounds like a windows problem. Like he selected in in Windows Explorer and Windows now won't give him access to write the file until he deselects it. I've seen stuff like that happen.

I see this all the time. It's a Windows problem. The PC sees the files on disk as Read-Only and copies them to your Dad's PC with those rights. Once he makes a copy of the copy, then he has a "clean" editable files to work on. All he would have to do is select all the images he initially copied, right click for Properties, and he should see the Read Only checkbox checked. Uncheck, hit apply, and he is good to go.
One should never stop striving for clarity of thought and precision of expression.

Thanks for the replies. I don't know why I thought it was a permissions problem; it doesn't make much sense in retrospect.

So the real solution is to convince my dad to get a Mac!
