Internal is good for "cheap". External is good for "portable", as in "move it from this machine to that machine without a screwdriver".
I was downloading a big binary on my G5 to an external drive. I'd been downloading it for days, as it appeared on USENET. Then the day came to move my G5 to a new locale, with the binary not yet fully downloaded and no telecomm in the new locale. So I moved the external drive to the Wallstreet with a Firewire Cardbus card, and continued downloading as I had been. I couldn't have done that with an internal drive.
