I have just downloaded too.

Macnn was in fact the first website I went to with Firefox.

It is the first time for me I use this software. I think I still prefer Safari.

Don't blame me.

I agree. The original poster should have put it in the right area, and a mod should have caught it by now (mod, . Still, a quick look at Show New Threads would show the correct thread as it's been quite lively these past few days.

I just wish it had a spell checker. I'd be all over Firefox if it did.

The best thing about Firefox becoming so popular, however, is that more and more websites will stop coding specifically for IE for Windows. When they do that, nearly any modern browser will render them correctly. The more popular Firefox becomes, the more freedom we'll have to use any browser.

http://twistermc.blogspot.com has a link to the direct download. They are getting slammed over at mozilla.org with people trying to access the site. More than they ever imagined!

the main mozilla ftp site is currently very slow - I assume it is because of the many downloaders

There is a mirror site at the following URL, which was much faster:

http://www.mozilla-europe.org/en/products/firefox/

I've just upgraded from the Preview Release and 1.0 just flies!

FF is great. Installed spellchecker, mouse gestures, zoom etc. It is fast and better than any web browser I have any seen!

Moose's steps to make Baby Jesus cry about FireFox's chances of Salvation:

1) Open a browser window.
2) In this browser window, start a download that won't finish real soon (10 minutes or so will be more than enough).
3) Close the download manager window if the download starts it.
4) Close any other remaining windows.
5) Weep at the sheet that springs down from the last window, telling you that you have a download going and that quitting will cancel it. Click "cancel download".
6) Hit Cmd-J to bring up the Download Manager again. Note that the file is still downloading and the application is still running.
7) Close the download manager.
8) Repeat step 5.

How in the name of dicklick did this pass QA?

I didn't have any problem downloading FF. It downloaded on the first try, and installed beautifully, also on the first try.

The only problem I had was that it would not import Safari bookmarks. The Windows version automatically imports IE favorites, but I guess since Safari doesn't want to export bookmarks, it's kind of hard to ask it for them. Anyway, I found a nice little utility to export Safari bookmarks to just about anything. It's called (ta da!) Safari Bookmark Exporter (gasp!), and it's from Elipsis Productions. Freeware/donationware.

All is well.

Safari's bookmark can be imported very easely (we do it in Camino) it's just that FireFox for os X is a *bit* less polished than it is for Windows - which is normal.

I was hoping the polishing was coming soon but it appears not. Oh well, still a great browser!!

The previous 1.0's were "1.0PR" preview releases - basically release candidates.
To check to see if you have the "real" 1.0 final release, type "about:" into Firefox's address bar. If it says "Firefox 1.0" then you're all set. If it gives any other number, you're using an older build.

I just noticed that yesterday too, when updating the copy of Firefox that we have in the university computer lab. It is indeed very weird.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Well, that just ain't right. The final, release version of Firefox 1.0 was released 11/9/04. Any version you acquired before then is a pre-release.

Now, does it make a difference? Maybe not. But just to be official, 1.0 final wasn't released until last Tuesday.

Is anyone else getting really bad performance with current firefox and Camino?

Seems really strange, but they both get CPU usages of 75% for ages, making the whole mac unusable.

You sure you're not talking about safari?

When you say 'current', do you mean the final release or one of the nightly builds?

I'm not seeing the symptoms you describe, Firefox 1.0.

Same here. In fact, for many of the financial and news sites that I regularly visit, FireFox 1.0 is significantly faster than Safari:)

seems strange.

yes I do mean firefox and camino not safari.

am using a nightly of camino, and the g4 optimised version of firefox. Annoyingly its not an isolated occurrence and happens most times I'm browsing with more than about 5 tabs

@threestain. Try my G4 optimized build dated 2004.11.04.
The builds after that date, including 1.0, is suffering from slow and jerky scrolling. Bug 268218.

I have a theory that Firefox uses up more and more memory the longer you leave it open. So if you don't quit Firefox in 8 hours it could be dragging the entire system down.

I keep firefox open for days and sometimes weeks b/c I put my mac to sleep rather than shutdown or restart.

If you suspect it's hogging more memory, you should set up a battery of tests where your mac is left running for many hours with firefox open and under different conditions (fresh restart, no pages browsed, etc.). Monitor its memory usage at half-hour or hour intervals with activity monitor.

But I can tell you that firefox is eating up 65MB of RAM right now after having been open and in use for many hours.

All-seeing and all-knowing since 2000 B.C.

There isn't any link to the Camino-build on you site.
But for anyone interested in the build, click here --> LINK

Maybe different computers? My theory was on a G4 450 tower. Course I could be wrong too. That'd be nice.
