I placed an order on 8-17-04 for a Dual G5 2.5 with a GeForce 6800. My OOB is still 9-22-04.

Has anybody actually heard anything new about any shipdates on any similar configured machines?

There's no way you're getting that before mid-October. Everyone with 6800s on order just got pushed back to Oct 15th, and I split my order.

Well I called Apple on the afternoon of the 15th to cancel my order (OOB moved up to Sep24 and I was going to buy a revB dual 2.0 at a local dealer), but when I called they told me it was too late and that the machine was sitting on a dock waiting to be shipped out. FedEx dropped her off on the 17th and man am I glad I was too late to cancel The machine was a breeze to set up (love the fact that Apple is using Royksp as the introductory music now - it used to be Kruder&Dorfmeister... whoever calls the shots on this stuff has great taste in music), transition from one machine to the other was seamless. Still can't get over just how quiet this baby is... doesn't even sound like it's on (until heavy computation kicks in, at which point the fans purr and pulse in a very cool manner). Inside and out the machine is a work of art - Apple has really outdone themselves this time, just a shame that availability has been such a travesty this summer. Anybody still waiting on their dual 2.5, hang in there - it'll all be worth it when she arrives

I had a feeling this was coming... Here is a copy of an email I just received. My machine originally was to ship on 9-22-04.

Unfortunately, we are experiencing unexpected delays and cannot meet the ship date we previously estimated for you. _We now expect to ship your Power Mac G5 with the NVidia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL Graphics Card on or before October 22nd. _If your order includes an Apple 30" Cinema HD Display, it will also ship on or before October 22nd. _Your satisfaction remains important to us and we do appreciate your patience. _We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience this delay has caused you.
_
Please rest assured that we fulfill all orders in the order they are received.

If you prefer, you may change or cancel your order anytime before it is shipped by calling 1-800-676-2775, or you may reply via email to [email protected]. _______

I didn't even get the letter. I check my status online on a regular basis, and in two days my ship date went from 9/23 to 10/22. Ugh! We deserve a discount! Or they should at least offer to ship the box with a lesser video card and upgrade it when the 6800 become available. I can understand pushing back the date some as necessary, but to push it back by a MONTH with 3 DAYS to go is just cruel!

My only hope is that they moved it back so far just to make sure they don't have to move it again. Maybe it's an exaggeration, or maybe it at least is more accurate than their original guess!

I say again, UGH!

Are people getting their 2.5s without the 6800 video card shipped "on time?"

I ordered on 8/21: Bluetooth and Wireless Keybd/Mouse, 250 GB, 2 x 512 MB RAM, Airport... OOB 9/28.

What are my chances?

Does anyone have a picture or has seen a picture of the motherboard with the processor/heatsink module off of it? It would be interesting to see what this module hooks into.

Hi all,
I just got the email yesterday saying that the G5 is delayed again. So this morning I called apple to confirm that my shipment is delayed, the person I spoke to said the best he can do for me is to ship the G5 in a week or so then ship the 6800 when it arrives sometime in october. To that I said sure send her out already, all this 3D work on my TiBook is getting to be a drag. Oh and I don't have to send the video card back when the 6800 arrives.

I'll chime in again when I find out more. Here's to another week or so of waiting.

Just received my shipment notification! "On Or About Sept. 28th" becomes Sept. 22nd!" Way to go Apple!

So it appears that it's not the Bluetooth/Wireless causing the delay... at least not now...

I place my order with Apple via telephone on 9/2/2004. The G5 I ordered was

Dual 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5 system for $3636
>1x 250gig HD
>512 MB RAM (stock 2x 256)
>8x Superdrive
>Nividia GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL
>Bluetooth module built-in with wireless KB and Mouse
>AirPort Extreme Card
>Internal modem
>Final Cut Express pre-installed
.Mac Promo for $69.95
AppleCare for $237
23" HD Alu (Apple Certified for $1699 - will send new one if they're out of Certified ones)

Had I sat down and ordered this online via Apple's Store web pages it would have cost me $6144. The telephone call saved me approx $576. The telephone sales person is in a position to offer buyers (based on being business, educational, personal and buyer's track record with Apple) promotional discounts. The online Store cannot do this (obviously). I in fact haggled/bartered over prices with the sales person and was successful in securing even lower prices on a few things. This was a new aspect as I've never been able to move Apple on their prices before this order.

My OOB date is 10/25/2004.

Wow, Apple must be catching up finally. I originally ordered a Dual G5 2.5 with an Nvidia 6800. Two days after receiving an email delaying shipment due to the lack of 6800 cards, I called, complained, and even mentioned I was thinking of cancelling the order. Only after mentioning a possible cancellation, did the Apple associate offer to ship the PowerMac with the 9600 video card and ship out the 6800 card later. Well that was 9-22-04 and I just got notification on 9-26-04 that my PowerMac shipped.

Why can't they mass produce these things!
It'll probably ship much sooner.

It shipped!

My 2.5G5 with a 9600 instead of a 6800 is on its way! The 6800 is scheduled to ship on-or-before October 22nd, but I don't mind waiting. Good luck to everyone still waiting for a machine!

So how is the 172x anyway?

So, it's here, and it's kernel panicking. They want me to wipe the drive and do a clean OS install. And if that doesn't fix it, I have to take it in to my local Apple Store.

Seriously, it's just one disaster after another.

Do you happen to have an old version (v1.1 or earlier) of the "Hardware Monitor" shareware application installed? These versions could trigger a bug in the fan drivers on some G5s, causing a kernel panic. Version 1.2 fixed it (version 1.2.1 is current) by disabling fan monitoring on systems with this bug.

No, I don't, but thanks for the reply. The system just got shipped on Wednesday, and the only things I am running are some Adobe apps, Azureus, VLC, Quicksilver, and World of Warcraft.

You are my new hero. I'm going to download the beta client that supposedly has a fix. If that stops my panics, you just saved me from an OS reinstall, a trip to the Apple Store, and a ton of pain.

I'll let you know if this fixes my problem, and if it does, I'll buy you a beer/root beer next time you are in the Minneapolis area.

I have virtually the same machine on order, so I am curious as to when it was placed. How long have you two been waiting?

"sweet, wonder when the 6800's will ship by themselves"

Good question. I'm still waiting for mine. I ordered a 2.5/6800 on 7/12 and got the machine with a 9600 on 9/22 (if I remember correctly).
My OOB date is 10/15 on the card.

heh, my original order was 6/13 or something like that, later upgraded that to include a 6800, got tired of waiting and bought a stock 2.5 at the local store, then ordered the card seperatly

4 MONTHS later...still no card

is there a problem here?

my estimated shipping date is 10/22

Sure, there's a problem with NVIDIA getting the 6800's to Apple. Duh.

While obviously the customers are the ones who are truly dependent, I still feel sorry for Apple here. The lack of cards is more nVidia's responsibility than anything else. Wasn't there a rumour that Apple had added Radeon X800 drivers to OS X so that they could more regularly supply people with high-end cards?

apple needs to stop announcing products until it has them ready to ship
this happens way to often

end of story

Well yes, but then the rumormongers will leak the stuff 3 or 4 months before they announce products, and much of the info will be bad.

I agree the supply chain management has been awful the past couple years or so... though EVERYONE is having problems with the 90 nm process, which was what caused all the chip issues. The 2.5's have been shipping for a while now, except for the 6800 Ultras. And you can't easily walk to your local computer store and get a 6800 Ultra for a PC yet, either.

And the Apple cards are more stringent than the PC ones... they have to be able to support Dual-Link DVI, which has HUGE bandwidth requirements. Probably the ones that aren't up to spec end up being sold as PC cards, because they have plenty of DVI bandwidth, just not Dual-Link DVI bandwidth

I hate to ruin my good karma or something, something.

I ordered mine on August 8th and had one delay on the order.

I did call last thursday to try to get a different card. Due to other people in the thread getting them.

But I am guessing that the cards must have just shipped in and/or Q and A must have signed off on the drivers and let let them fly. And that was why they told me the 11th was the shipping date.

Maybe being a .mac renewer bumps up my Apple 'rdf' karma.

I will post pics if possible; unless somebody else does tomorrow.

Don't expect me to post frame rates and photoshop test stuff, I am just a user. Unless you all post linkage on how to.

And NO I won't give it to anybody for testing.

Jeff
