Every so often, when I'm just browsing around, my network connection just hangs. I know it's not my external connection, because even connections to localhost don't work. This is on a G5 with 10.4.4 (but I've seen it on 10.4.3).

netstat almost always looks like this. One or two connections in CLOSE_WAIT with incoming data. Sometimes, netstat hangs as well, and comes back when web pages resume loading.
Code:
]% netstat Active Internet connections Proto Recv-Q Send-Q Local Address Foreign Address (state) tcp4 441 0 192.168.0.3.61201 macnn.com.http CLOSE_WAIT tcp4 413 0 192.168.0.3.61200 macnn.com.http CLOSE_WAIT tcp4 369 0 192.168.0.3.61199 macnn.com.http CLOSE_WAIT tcp4 396 0 192.168.0.3.61198 macnn.com.http CLOSE_WAIT tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.61175 magenta.macnn.co.http CLOSE_WAIT tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.61172 forums.something.http CLOSE_WAIT tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.61004 cyrus.andrew.cmu.imaps ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.60937 cyrus.andrew.cmu.imaps ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.60723 cyrus.andrew.cmu.imaps ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.60722 64.12.31.140.aol ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.60721 caim-m03b.blue.a.aol ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.60720 oam-d11a.blue.ao.aol ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.60719 64.12.31.96.aol ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.60715 caim-d03b.blue.a.aol ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.60714 oam-d07c.blue.ao.aol ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.60712 205.188.9.126.aol ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.60711 205.188.9.40.aol ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 192.168.0.3.60705 64.233.167.125.jabber- ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 localhost.netinfo-loca localhost.1015 ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 localhost.1015 localhost.netinfo-loca ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 localhost.netinfo-loca localhost.1017 ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 localhost.1017 localhost.netinfo-loca ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 localhost.netinfo-loca localhost.1021 ESTABLISHED tcp4 0 0 localhost.1021 localhost.netinfo-loca ESTABLISHED
When everything clears back up, the CLOSE_WAITs are gone.

Other times, it seems Safari has trouble connecting to multiple servers at the same time. Like, if someone posts a lot of Image Shack thumbnails (which are hosted across many different domains), only a couple will load and I'll have to stop and reload a couple of times to get them all.

It doesn't affect open connections. So for instance, I can still talk on AIM.

It seems like I'm running into a ceiling on the maximum open connections or something. Any ideas?

One question: how much RAM do you have?

Also, mtr is a very useful tool for diagnosing some network problems. Just leave it running pinging yahoo, google, or your ISP, and see where the packets get dropped.

2.5 GB

The weirdest part is the connections hanging to localhost. I've never seen that before.

I was going to weigh in that this belonged in Networking, but now I don't think so. If it's hanging with localhost, there's something odd going on beyond network settings.

It looks like it may just be a Safari thing. During the most recent hangup, mtr show absolutely no packet loss to both news.google.com and apple.com, both of which were hung in Safari. I opened up Firefox and it loaded Google news just fine. I am running Pith Helmet, but I've seen no difference with it disabled.

Updates:

a) It goes away when I quit and restart Safari. Other browsers are affected, but again, quiting and restarting fix it
b) I installed 10.4 on my spare hard drive and the problem showed up immediately.
c) Using my old PBG4 as an ethernet bridge works great, no problems
d) Using a store-bought ethernet bridge causes the same problems
e) Changing wireless routers did not help

I have no solution to offer, but I am seeing the same issue. Browsing away quite happily then Safari basically hangs loading pages. All tabs are affected. Usually the progress bar covers the http:// section but gets no further. Come back in a few minutes and pages will load fine.

MBP, PB, and I believe my wife was complaining her G5 does the same thing too.

Need to play some more to see if only Safari is affected at the time or not.

It seems that the combination of switching to Camino and upgrading the router has helped.

There could be a couple of different things going on. Occasionally my wireless network will drop for a minute or two if a bug truck goes by and fuzzes up the radio signal.

Thanks for the reminder to update the router. I checked and an update was available for mine. So far no hangs since.

At one point Adelphia performed some sort of modification to the network that caused it to be completely unavailable to Mac users. This could be something similar.

That's interesting. I don't know much about networking, but it looks like you're on Carnegie Mellon's network (the cyrus.andrew.cmu.imaps gives it away). I am too, and I have the exact same problem as you do. Could the problem lie in the network itself?

Hi!

I have experienced the same thing. Only Safari is affected. The connection seems to hang for about two minutes or so before everything reverts to normal operation. A ping to the site that's being loaded is OK, so it may be that only http connections are affected. Replacing the WLAN router didn't have any effect.
