Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Suffering From #GapGate | TechCrunch

The hilarious part are the people saying it's "no big deal". Apparently, these people never got dust in their phones.

Dust? If you keep it in your pocket it'll be lint.

With the 30-pin dock, that port would accumulate so much debris, Apple had a guide on how to get it out if there was so much, it prevented proper connection.

This is going to look nasty.

It's a very niche product, something like 30k units?

No- this is the Note 4. Millions. You're thinking the Galaxy Edge.

At first they said it was only going to affect the 30,000 unit initial run for S Korea* and fix it for the rest of the world, they just now updated it to say that Samsung is saying "f**k it" and going to leave the gap. It might be required, maybe it's a cooling thing, but that seems pretty shoddy.

(*Not unusual for their flagship launches, as they almost always build a batch just for enthusiasts in their home country, generally with a different SOC package and more connectivity options. They aren't even built in the same factory.)

If it only affected the initial, enthusiast batch for S Korea it would be something that the rest of the world would never encounter. Doesn't appear to be the case, however.

I don't think the nationality of the customers, nor the number customers, is relevant to the fact that it is a faulty, badly designed product.

As someone who was so vocal about 'bendgate' (with little more than a few YouTube videos as "proof"), wouldn't you agree with my previous statement? (Or do you have different standards for judging Apple and Android products?)

I'm pretty sure the gap is in all markets, as the ENGLISH version of the user's manual addresses it.

Samsung was quick to jump on Apple with little actual proof.

It does, because their headquarters is located there and they're practically worshipped, small bugs and other weirdness don't matter to those enthusiasts, they want whatever Samsung is producing ASAP. It's a lot like them selling beta hardware (I have a Korean early release Tab 2 and its CPU doesn't throttle, just runs at top speed all the time when it's on). Whether that's right or not is up to those who are buying the devices, they know what they're getting into. However, this isn't the case in this instance, and as a global release product, that looks pretty shoddy.

Wrong. The gap is even mentioned in the manual.

Apparently it's been the same with the Note 2 and 3, and they included a note about the gap in the manuals of both models. Weird, I owned the Note 2 and don't remember a gap in it (or the notice, not that I ever read the manuals).

I just noticed this. Maybe it was a typo or an auto-correct? I don' know, it was late.

Can a mod fix that, please?

I'm trying to say you didn't read the article.

Curiously, though, Samsung directly addresses this issue in its manual for the European Galaxy Note 4...

We tested the Note 2 and 3 for our article on it, and there was no gap.

I got a Note 3 right here, there is no gap. It's a good device, as such things go.
