Today they offer FREE download of Stuffit Standard, with license, for Windows only. Here's the interaction when I wrote them about it.

Typical arrogant response. Lots of other people do it so it's OK. Not by me! I have a nice day every day but I blackball discriminatory sellers like Smith Micro and NEVER forget. I haven't bought a Firestone tire since 1978 because of their despicable handling of their 721 tire. I have lots of software companies to purchase from so not using Smith software won't ruin my life. I'm sure all the Mac forums will be interested to hear of your response.
Response (Jay Robinson) 09/06/2010 01:57 PM
jerpat,
The version for the MAC does more and takes more to develope. Bottom line is cost to make the product. Sorry you feel this way however I think you will find a number of software companies that charge more for the MAC software the Windows. Have a nice weekend.
Regards,
Jay Robinson

Your are offering StuffIt Windows (Standard) as a FREE download
StuffIt Windows (Standard)
but only for Windows. Even if I buy your software you charge double for the Mac version. I WILL REMEMBER your discrimination. This is a despicable way to do business.

Stuffit still exists ?
For cross-plattform, I use ZIP.

Stuffit isn't under any obligation to offer a free Mac version.
Did you stop to consider the rep's point of view and whether he might be correct -- does more and more development costs?
I don't get your sense of entitlement here.

I wonder if they even make money on the Windows version. How often do you have to open a .sit file on Windows?

Ever since Aladdin got bought, StuffIt has gotten more expensive and less useful. Honestly, I haven't found a use for it since OS 9.

Ditto. About once or twice a year I need StuffIt expander. Can't remember the last time I needed to create a SIT file.

Maybe you should write back and tell them to go stuff it?

Some .sitx files still don't work with Unarchiver yet, AFAIK.
I haven't needed it in over a year, and I've certainly not needed anything beyond the free unstuffer in about ten years...

I recently had to resort to the free Stuffit Expander to open a couple of password-protected ZIP files. It was the only thing I knew of that could do the job.

Didn't know about Unarchiver at the time. I'll keep it in-mind for the future.

And it's unlikely they ever will, since the format is patented.

The OP burst in with guns a-blazin'. He didn't give the company any way to respond positively — nor any reason to, since he'd already declared his disloyalty to them.
Take his post as a poster-child example of how NOT to get your way from a CS rep. (As a CS rep, I guarantee you I won't help a customer like that!)

The customer service guy couldn't even write "Mac" correctly. That says something about how much they like us.

For the longest time, wasn't Stuffit Mac-only anyway?

Yes. Stuffit was originally a Mac shareware product.

Thankfully, almost nobody uses it. Except of course, Smith Micro.

One printer company (Canon I think from memory) STILL supplies its downloadable printer drivers as sitx files. Which means a trip to the Smith Micro site to download the free expander if it's not on customer Macs. I have the installer on a drive now but it irks when a Mac peripheral supplier takes so little care it still uses these sitx files.

Actually, both my printer and scanner are both Canon and the drivers are available as a .dmg with an installer package. It may have been that way for awhile, though.

What is the last updated date/postdate of those drivers? This could be very old drivers that they didn't bother to take down and repackage.
