Just a rant tbh...

Just about to get a Magsafe swapped out for the 4th time!! Totally unacceptable for me, especially with the end of my warranty fast approaching.

The cable seems to separate from the actual 'magsafe' block at the end of the adapter, exposing cables and wires...

I don't stretch or bend the cable over and above what is to be expected in a machine I use daily, but every 3 or 4 months, the things just perishes, comes apart, and has on a few occasions given me electric shocks.

Magsafe? Great idea. Dreadful implementation.

Over a year here and nary a problem with the connector. I do have the individual wires within the cable shifting a little, so it isn't as smooth as it once was (I actually coil and uncoil the cord a few times a day during the week), but other than that no problems at all.

It seems like a yield issue to me, and you just got unlucky. Apple must have made some adjustments to their manufacturing process by now. We had to exchange a magsafe adaptor a few weeks ago. Let's see if we're lucky.

As a side note, I hate doing the whole "Genius Bar" bit when I have to do something brain-dead like return an obviously defective device under warranty. The whole process makes me feel like I should be grateful that the High Priests deign to talk to me about my warranty repair when I don't have an appointment. Then the guy told me that damage due to strain wasn't covered, but he'd make an exception for me. How kind of him. Is being overly pretentious part of their business plan?

I had my battery replaced 3 times and power adaptor replaced once (worth $466). They were willing to replace the battery even though I was out of warrantee. That's good.

Still, if my current battery dies, I demand a new computer!!!!

My previous MagSafe adapter did the same thing. Apple replaced it no problem (still under warranty), but I'm worried about what the next time will bring.

It's retarded that weak cable reinforcement is killing these adapters -- and Apple's recommended way of stashing the cord away is to twist it around the little arms that flip out. That kind of stress on a daily basis is sure to start damaging the little wires inside.

It's not like new ones are cheap. :-|

Sorry to hear you had so much trouble. I've used MagSafe adapters ever since they came out. I own five now and at work I use about half a dozen others. I've yet to have a single problem. No hissing, no vibrations, no frayed cables, no heat.

I'm wondering if these MagSafe issues have to do with certain batches going bad. There seem to be issues for some people, but I've never had any problems at all myself.

In your case, I'd seriously consider AppleCare. OTOH one MagSafe charger (which will come with its own warranty) costs $79. AppleCare costs $349.
